Hey guys,
Been about to launch into some new campaigns and such so I wanted to put together a really nice but relatively simple grass board that feels great to game on but is pretty versatile.
It's nothing ground breaking but I'm pretty happy with the results. This was my first time using static grass and it is so satisfying!
The Finished BoardThe board is made from a sheet of 4x4 Masonite or hardboard with a 50mm thick sheet of orange EXTRUDED polystyrene. The wonderfully responsive insulation version of polystyrene, not that white aerated bubbly rubbish.
I carved a few little valleys and built up a few hills and smoothed everything out with a lot of wood putty so the board wasn't completely flat, but wasn't so undulating that you couldn't put terrain down on it.
Then I covered it with a sheet of summer green static grass mat. No battlefield looks like a golf green so I applied layers of different coloured grasses sporadically across the board to create some more depth and variation. It actually looks more varied than in the photos.
The Board with no TerrainThe trees are the Woodland Scenics tree making kits which were really fun to experiment with and are based on small pieces of 3mm MDF, and grassed to match up with the board.
TreesThe rocky outcrops are just hand carved from more of the 50mm extruded polystyrene and then painted up and covered with grasses.
Rocky OutcropsAnyway, super simple stuff but I just fell so in love with static grass and how quickly you can apply it with the fancy applicator, I thought I'd share it with you guys.
Cheers,
