Got around to basing the other members of the company that I've done so far. Here they are in all their finished glory now:

Image

Still a long way to go with this set, but I think I'm making progress at least. Up next in the production line is a sprue of terrain:

Then will have to figure out which member of the company to have a bash at next.

I vote for dwalin, heavy hitter And a great model.

Everything looks great. I hated doing the scenery for this set, it is a lot of little things to look for.

Scenery looks nice! I have a set still on the sprue, am I right in saying that you can build/rebuild it rather than having to glue it together? Any good guides on doing so? :)

It's nice they give a big bit of scenery with the set, but having seen that there's a second sprue of it, plus all the extras like the goblin throne, weapons cache, etc... its going to be a long slog!

It slots together pretty tightly, so doesn't seem like it needs gluing. My only worry is that lots of slotting and unslotting might wear off some paint, but I'll come to that when I come to it I guess!

Finished painting up this bit of goblin town, reasonably happy with how it's come out, not having done anything particularly special with it.

The company is accosted by a pack of goblins:

Thanks!

Got going on Gloin today as the next of the company. First time out with my new Winsor & Newton series 7 brushes, and impressed with them! Seem great quality, and hold a very fine point whilst having much more body than the GW ones, I'm a happy painter.

Image

Was going to go a bit more ginger on the beard, but it's ended up looking rather red so far. May keep it a similar colour to this, or may highlight a much sharper orange... will see.

I really hope I can get my Gloin's face and hair to look like yours! Judging from the rest of your company the completed Gloin will turn out great :)

Thanks for the kind words Baardeend. I must admit I haven't made much progress - July was so warm that sitting inside painting didn't have much appeal. Hopefully I can get going and get Gloin finished in the near future though!

Here we go, managed to spend a bit of time getting Gloin finished off:

Image

I'm pretty happy with him, I think overall it's my best attempt at one of the dwarves so far. Was thinking of trying to do some patterning on the red armour, but in the end decided not to dare - maybe next time. I'll need to set up a light-box again at some point to try to take better pictures.

Not sure what's up next, but at some point I need to finish off the goblin king I started three years ago!

I like the way you blended brown into your reds. It is clear when it needs to be and fuzzy where it must be close to red!

Nice job on Gloin. The mini looks fantastic, and I agree, the Reds and Browns are brilliant!

Thanks for the kind words, guys. Been quite a while since my last update, but I got back on with it at last. Up next was Thorin, and I had a bit more trouble with the blue than I did with previous reds - its possibly come out a little duller than I'd hoped for.

Image

Tried to make it a little more interesting with a little criss-cross pattern on his coat, it's not come out quite as clearly as I'd hoped, but always good to try to do extra things to make an improvement I think!

I've got Dwalin and Bofur primed up and ready to go, I'm quite worried about the amount of detail on both, just need to decide which to dare to try first...

Went with Dwalin in the end, he's very much "WIP" at the moment, but at least I've gotten started:

Image

His eyes are very deep-set and I'm not sure I can do them justice, so I'm debating whether just to leave them shaded rather than try to paint them in and risk ruining the face by doing it badly.

Got Dwalin finished off, only potential extra was maybe trying to put tattoo's on his head, but I haven't dared to try that yet.

Image

Would prefer to get some pictures in natural light as these are coming out with the skin looking more yellow than it really is, but alas the British weather is currently preventing any daylight photographs!

*Edit* - Potentially slightly better picture reel here...

On the hobby table today:

Image

I've started work on Bofur, with the face as usual. Also, you can see a goblin king waiting to get green-stuffed.

Back a good two years ago, one of the things that stopped my hobby momentum was a total inability to paint the great goblin. I had the idea that I could just start off with some fleshy colours and then wash some different things lightly over the top to make him look a bit pale and gross. It didn't really work though and he looked really messy and I got a bit disheartened. So, I've decided to strip him and start again - I tried the dettol thing, and it worked great, removing the paint with an old toothbrush after soaking him in the dettol for a while, plastic looks fine still, so its all good.

I've found I did a really bad job gap-filling last time around, so I need to go in with the green stuff and smooth out the joins much better this time, so that's work-in-progress along with Bofur.

I really like the way you've done the eyes on these guys, especially on Thorin. 8)

Been making some progress on Bofur... a bit rough around the edges at the moment, but hopefully will get him mostly finished today!
