Hi guys!

In Battle of five armies, there were few, bit smaller and armored trolls in battlefield, just before dwarf army rallied to charging Thorin & his company. If anyone would happen to have some screencaps or artbook images on those i would be happy to see some! I would like to convert one for this months hobby challenge, but it seems i cant find any pictures on those. I have some sort of image of them in my mind, especially one with helmet but i would like to have bit more detailed reference :D

Thank you!

Well that ineffective troll had a metal hat, a triangle. I dont know how to explain it, a triangular prism. There were way too many trolls in that movie

While I certainly understand your disappointment with the movie, I would try to avoid turning this thread into a debate of whether or not there should have been more or less trolls in the movie rather than what the posting user asked for. Lets keep on topic.

Eric,

You will find many images of the trolls by simply googling Trolls in the Battle of Five Armies. There are many images of the standard trolls with swords as hands. Regarding the other more "unique" trolls, the catapult trolls are easily found, but the battering ram troll and troll on stilts with ball and chain arms are slightly more difficult. They only have a few seconds in the movie and are not shown in the trailer.

I would also try to wait until at least february since it is very likely we will see rules and models released for these units.

@I Am Frodo, there's more than one of them, although they are all identical, and they all die the same way at the same time so its not hard to see why you were confused. But there weren't too many Troll in that movie, there weren't quite enough.

Like he says, they have helmets which are pointed, the helmets are similar to ones you see on the Trolls pushing the Siege Towers in RotK, and their armour is of a similar style to that of the Gundabad Orcs. Also, they carry clubs, which are surprisingly low tech, just wood with metal spikes as far as I could tell.

Ball and chains? They are call maces, and I believe you are talking about the Bofur Troll, there are some good shots of him in the Hobbit Chronicles Book.

Well something tells me waiting till february is off the table as he want to participate in the sculpting and converting challenge.
Best idea is to try streaming the film pause it at the right point and print screen the relevant frames. there are streaming options of really high quality on the interenet now.
Good luck and I'm looking forward to seeing your models :)

Also, the Bofur Troll I've just mentioned is in 2 scenes actually. The second one in which Legolas kills him and the first during the main battle where he is seen along with several other unique Trolls smashing enemy warriors. Not that this is relevant to the Trolls you are asking about, but I though I'd just make sure everyone is on the same page.

In some earlier shots of the battle the trolls are carrying shield-like scythes on their arms, but in these shots they're carrying clubs like the ones in the mordor troll plastic kit.

Oh, this guy? He mostly looks like a cave troll except with a pointy hat. A very stylish, pointy hat.

These are the exactly the ones i was looking for, thank you so much! I didn't recall they all were the same! Yeah i found that scythe one, it is kinda similar, but way bigger than these. Some of the trolls in this film were so big... i definitely prefer these scale wise.

Thank you all, now to take proof pic!

I'm curious to know if the big trolls are just older cave trolls or if they're a different type entirely.

I'd presume it is blurred distinctions.

We've only ever actually seen 1 Cave Troll in any of the films. It is purely an assumption they all look alike. The Mordor Trolls, or 'War Trolls', I have even seen officially described as Olog-Hai!

I'd guess they are just 'trolls', but clearly not Mountain trolls as they turn to stone...

I'd love to see more references. I have the book from Weta workshop about it and it all seems very 'loose', it references a lot of stuff that really never made it, yet the stuff that did make it is often omitted. I reckon/hope there will be another, final, tome containing more of the concepts used for final designs, costumes, weapons, armies, etc...
