I think the ideal ending for BotFA is to end it like the book, with Bilbo, Gandalf and Balin - but I really wouldn't say no to some credits scenes or something, just short sequences filling in some detail. Perhaps shots of Gollum searching for the Baggins when he gets nabbed by Orcs, or Balin, Oin and Ori leading an army of Dwarves to the now undefended gate of Moria one last time.

At the very least I expect Balin's fate to be referenced if the film ends with Balin and Gandalf visiting for tea, perhaps he and Gandalf disagree regarding some of Balin's plans now that the orcs of the mountains have been thinned by the Battle. Balin saying that it's now or never, with Gandalf warning him that Durins Bane still lurks in Moria. But of course - the Dragon was killed, who is to say that they could not now put an end to Durins Bane? Maybe Balin believes the time of the Dwarves is nigh. I digress. Sorry.

If the film ends like any of these suggestions, I for one will be very happy. I think a lead on to the Lord of the Rings would be a very good idea. It would round it of well, especially with the reference at the very beginning of AUJ. Sort of seems necessary for completeness and conclusion.

Nobody's going to make the Children of Hurin i think, because of the somewhat disgusting sexual nature of it.

Pretty much just an oedipus story. Quite common in world mythology, and not especially lurid.

Funny how rejoicing in blowing people to gory pieces is seen as acceptable while an intelligent treatment of unwitting incest is "beyond the pail".

I think "disgusting sexual nature" is a massive overstatement. It makes it sound like a salacious story, which it absolutely isn't.

Turin and Neanor were separated when they were young, Glaurung the Father of Dragons puts a spell on Neanor who forgets her identity. Turin and Neanor get married, not knowing that they are actually brother and sister. Then Glaurun reveals his trickery, and everybody dies.

Although I've already read it twice, that literally explained the whole book to me. 2manynames4me

i understand that Game of Thrones features this exact bit, but the Lannisters are for the most part portrayed as the "bad guys" whereas people would find it different from the protagonists' point of view. and yes, i agree that the double standard for violence in modern media is lame, and that Nienor is disgusted herseelf when she finds out but... i just feel that the Children of Hurin isn't up there with the "top filmable stories of Middel-Earth". don't get me wrong, it's one of my favourites, but it wouldn't, IMO, translate to screen very well.

Game of Thrones incest really IS salacious!

The accidental incest story is quite a common one. Oedipus is the most famous example, and that story appears in different forms throughout polytheistic mythology, but King Arthur fathers a child on his half sister after she bewitches him, Moll Flanders, there's the whole Luke and Leia thing- it's a trope that reappears quite often for some reason.

But yeah, in order to be the "bad guys" you really need to know what you're doing and accept it, like the disgusting Lanisters. When the participants are victims of circumstance or external evil (Morgana, Glaurung) then it's a tragedy, and the protagonists can be painted as tragic heroes.

The trailer for DoS extended was interesting. Showing Bilbo climb across roots and branches to get across a stream where the bridge is out and then the dwarves follow and Bombur falls asleep (though I think Thorin was supposed to fall asleep and be taken by the elves first in the book). This at least points to a scene I remember from long ago where they were carrying Bombur on a stretcher. Though there must be a scene where he wakes up since they will not be carrying him when the spiders arrive...Though I think the Mirkwood stuffy slow walking is boring stuff as it is so I hope for more scenes (cough fight with Gandalf and Thrain).

New lego sets leaked through One Ring.Net

http://newboards.theonering.net/forum/g ... =118326411

I remain more excited by Dol Guldur than the titular battle of the movie (holding out hope that Sauron gets to do more than float around being impressive) and some evidence that the Witch King is involved in a larger role than his (cool, but mildly disappointing) cameo in AUJ is excellent (providing that PJ hasn't changed stuff again, CG ing in a giant dolphin or something over the Witch King). If he's all ghostly and stuff I bet a plastic clampack could do wonders - GWs plastic ghosts for WFB have been excellent.

Maybe. Or maybe too many people looked at them - I know my photobucket account once went into lockdown when too many people saw some photos on it I'd shared.

I wish I'd saved them. Descriptions are still up on the site, though, and I imagine they'll be everywhere in a day or two.

This could just be the same WK from AUJ but just re-used. Either way it would be cool to get a new twilight version of him or indeed all of the 9 in that form with a whispy version of Necromancer to lead them.

It would indeed. I've had a mental image of a towering Sauron made of fire locked in a sorcerous duel with the wizards and Galadriel since the last movie, and even though I know it probably won't happen like that I'm damned excited to see what IS in store.
