Hello everyone. I must ask, which of all the Trolls do you think is best? Does each of them have a special role maybe? Are they worth their points value?
Ok, heres the deal to me......Ill go through it all because Ive owned/own them all for you, and my opinion. Ive used them ALL in actual games. From smallest points to largest:
Half Troll- Great for points value. Only loses fights to great heros. Two attacks. Great strength....not even 25 points. SMALL base so they cant swarm you. If prefer to bring 4-5 of these to any other troll in the game for the overall value. You get a few of these guys close to elves, and theirs going to be blond hair, perfume, and shields everywhere.
Cave Troll- AWESOME for its points value. Ive run a goblin army with 3 of these guys before....sure, their defense isnt the best, but it adds not only a great punch, but a great distraction to your goblin army. Never take less than two. Optimal is 3-4 in a 750 pt army. For less than 85 points, you can use brutal monster attacks too.
Mordor Troll-Good but totally not worth it. Ive seen these go down(and taken these down) over and over again. Too many points for their worth. Still good of course, but way too fragile. Ive taken these down in one turn of careful planning several times. Happened to me as well. And it doesnt make sense....Mordor is more of an army where you either take all elites, or whorde. I dont feel he fits in either plan. You pay 20 more than a cave troll, for unecessarily upped strength(6 is enough to wound most units on 4s) and a better defense and fight. His defense being 7 though is pointless to me, because either way you need a 6 to wound him with most units...not like the Isengard troll or Chieftan where you need 6s by 4s.
Isengard Troll-Same as Mordor troll, but even more pointless to me. Isengard is a VERY strong army and you dont need a punch like a troll. If you use their units the right way, they arent cheap either so a troll is a points sink in this list. At least they have a great defense being 8. But ive had my Isengard troll wounded by elf arrows more times than I care to think about. All that being said......his fight goes back down to a 6....now youre not even beating heros, which is his job.
Mordor Troll Chieftan-EXCELLENT model. The might is an awesome thing to have, he can lead a warband which is incredible, and hes really hard to kill. Great fight value.
Finally, the Three Trolls from the Hobbit....its hard to talk about these guys.....because they can be in or lead warbands........But they are all GREAT profiles.
Bill(Leader of them in the movie)- over 145 points, yes, but has tremendous stat line including beating almost all good characters in a tie fight. He. Has. 3. Points. Of. Might. Most by any troll in the game, and can change a game easily with it.
Without going into too much detail, his special rules are awesome as well.
Burt(goofy one cooking the food)- just over a 100 with 1 point of might. Great stat line of course, and nice special rules. Since hes the weakest of the three, Ill go into his rules.
Roast Em Slowly: If you use points for their fire, he can win a fight, put any model near it, and theyre set ablaze....its a rule in the rulebook.
Lingering Cold: He uses a will point at the beginning of the fight(he has three) to halve the fight value of his opponent......thats epic considering his is 6 and he has 3 attacks.
Tom(other one lol)-2 points of might, 7 7 7 for fight strength and D, and Squash Em to Jelly special rule....If hes swarmed and wins the fight, he does a strength 7 hit to every opponent.
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.............There you are....any more questions, please ask. The Three trolls are all good, but Burt is AWESOME for sure.
Tell me what army youre thinking of and Ill tell you which youd probably go for.
