Tidied up a few bits. Added some blood to the face, and a few glases. Still some small details to do. Finding it hard to make things stand out without highlight overkill. Interesting though.

Lovely OSL on the face. You have given him a great rugged look.

Aragorn looks great. The mood the colors are setting is foreboding. Very well painted.

That Aragorn is just fantastic. I think you've struck the balance of making the grazes and blood noticable without being distracting. They give the desperate and blooded yet relentless feel of the character at Helm's Deep that is often missing on other paintjobs of the mini. How did you go about painting them?

Thanks for that, it's what I aim for. Did you mean the whole thing or the blood? The blood was just a touch of that new Blood for the Blood God paint from GW. The face was given an extremely watered down Nuln Oil wash to give it that dirty look.

If you meant the entire model then I'd have to take some time to think about it, as I was trying some new techniques I haven't quite got the hang of, but a list of paints is no problem.

The main things I'm doing lately involve the following -

Combination/twin priming
http://massivevoodoo.blogspot.ie/2009/1 ... ughts.html

Wet Pallette
http://massivevoodoo.blogspot.ie/2009/1 ... lette.html

Glazes
http://massivevoodoo.blogspot.ie/2009/1 ... lazes.html

There are tons of youtube videos on those techniques and more. For the small details I still relied on traditional style layering.

I've finished it now a few minutes ago and based it up.

Here's a comparison to one I did about 10 years ago

I just meant the blood but it's always nice to have an idea of what went into the full model. Great, great work Gene. Was the Nuln Oil wash the final step on the face?

I may pinch this idea when I get around to repainting him 8)

I think so. I'm pretty sure I just used whatever nuln oil was left on the brush after I went over the chainmail, it's only a tiny hint. I started off with the twin priming. Then all watered down all the paints for each layer - 60:40 paint to water. Bugmans Glow over the whole face. Cadian Fleshtone over everything except the deepness of the eye sockets and the "stubble" part of the jaw. Washed with Reikland Fleshshade. Another layer of cadian fleshtone over the forhead, nose, lip and cheeks. then about 50:50 Cadian Fleshtone with Vallejo Pale flesh over the extreme eyebrow line, length of the nose and just on the cheekbones under the eyes (I might have done a further highlight here again 75:50 Pale flesh to Cadian). Then I added the blood and washed over with that tiny hint of black.

Bit blurry but the contrast is higher. Good luck with yours!

Nice one, cheers. I'll give it a go and see how it turns out.

Nice comparison shot! It shows clearly how much your style has changed and developed, though I have to say that even the old mini looks great!

Aragorn looks great! You always do such impressive work on the faces of models, which is something I'm still struggling with myself

Thanks. The biggest step for me I think was to stop using Elf Flesh, and just add white/vallejo pale flesh to Cadian Fleshtone (Dwarf Flesh). I think Sid gave me that tip last summer. Gives the skin a much more natural tone.

The paintwork on that miniature is amazing! I'm starting to paint my aragorn and was wondering what all the paints you used were?

I pre-shaded/twin primed as described above. Same goes for the face.

I used Rhinox Hide for the tunic, with a very small highlight of rhinox hide mixed with baneblade brown. Hair was done similarly.

Boots were baneblade brown and highlighted with baneblade brown mixed with rakarth flesh. Dirt on the tunic was rakarth flesh.

Metals were leadbelcher, highlighted with ironbelcher, and the tips done in runefang steel. wash with nuln oil.

Leathers were gorthor brown and highlights with bugmans glow. wash with reikland fleshtone.

Belts and clothes fasteners were all eshin grey highlighted with dawnstone.

That's about it really. There were others i used for small bits but i forget what. As I said earlier I was experimenting all the way.

Thanks again.

I have taken some better pictures, some of you had asked for them a while back. I've also set up a Cool Mini or Not profile where you can see some other stuff I've done over the past 18 months. http://www.coolminiornot.com/artist/Gen ... id=8554603 (should go live this afternoon some time)

Like an embedded link? I don't quite understand what you mean. Link from OR to there or from CMON to here?
