I ordered 8 Gundabad Blackshields, and because both blisters had defective models GW sent me an additional 8. Now I have 16 elites to paint.

I don't like GW's paint scheme, (red is too gaudy a color for underground troglodytes), so I've decided to go with a darker palette for my test run Gundabad.

What do you think?

I agree on that. Red, although bright, is not a suitable colour for this kind of minis, imho. I prefer your colour scheme than GW's (though you don't have to sell any miniatures as GW has to).

Even if orcs or goblins have pilfered an item of clothing, it is unlikely to stay clean for any length of time so you could have any original colour, but it will be filthy as worn by them, so lots of stains and dirt to be applied. That would tone down red or any other bright colour.

I would generally look for different colour schemes on each figure, but keeping the same dirty washes to give them some unity.

I never saw these in FC. They were so cheap as metals (4 for $12) that I bought a ton of them, sorry you had to deal with that, but then again, you got 8 free models from it, so good for you.
I won't get in a scheme argument since colors and models are very personal to people and many people use GW schemes. So you wanted to paint a different color, and Brown goes with Goblins like stink on hippies. I think they look great. The sculpts were never fantastic anyway, blob of leather, chainmail and fur with a goblin head stuck on and a over size shield. But, once painted up they fit the army well. have fun.

Thanks everyone for their comments. After painting half of the models I can assuredly say that the spearmen are some of the worst models in the range....

Here are some of the nearly finished models (final highlights on their capes remain to be done).

I also completed some copses; I used actual moss and lichen for their bases.

Finally here is the Dwarven king I have been working on as a break from the Gundabad's.

I am approximately three quarters of the way through with him. His face needs some small touches, his beard some highlights and then axe, gloves, boots, and voila. I also tried my hand on some embroidery for his cloak; the result is a bit unpolished, but practice makes perfect :).

Nice touch with the freehand on the cloak. They all look great with that dirty looking bunch definately looking the part.

Looking good!
A shame the last pics are out of focus.

Shading on the cloak looks great.
Freehand seems good as well, pic is a bit unclear but from what I can see it's good 8)

Thank you Gandalf, i figured I had to start practicing freehand sooner or later.

Yes Delirivm, unfortunately the picture quality is far less than optimal. It is an issue I've been having throughout my WIP, and it's a shame; nevertheless thank you for your kind comments!

The king is now painted, and awaits basing.

I have now started painting Golum.

He is holding a piece of salmon (my favorite fish). After consultations with the co-owner of the mini, I'll be changing it into a trout...

Under the Hobby Challenge thread, I also have some pics of the Legolas I'll be submitting for the monthly contest.

You have done his back very well. I think his face could be a touch lighter and the eyes as well.

Thank you for your comment Gandalf :). Yes I decided to tone up the whole model, besides the eyes. I want Gollum's mien to reflect his darker side.
