Annoyed that his friendly competition finished so abruptly, Haldir persues Smaug to exact vengeance. Smaug gets a terrible feeling that killing the elven king may not have been a every good career choice.

Smaug however, promptly ignores the pathetic Elfling, for who he has no respect, as he has bigger fish to fry. He tries to turn his attention to Lake-Town, but unfortunately a rather large tree(in Smaug's opinion) is slowly lumbering along, and is blocking his view. Smaug decides to light a funeral pyre and so Treebeard is hit with the force of his breath.

After everything they had been through together and no matter how much they rivaled, Haldir realises that Thranduil was actually a good friend. He goes to find his killer in Erebor. When he sees that Smaug is off killing trees, he finds Gwaihir flying around in the sky and shoots him instead.
