How many points is standard in tournament play?

me and my friends are planning on doing our own tournament but cant decide what points level to practice at. we would like to practice list building and competitive playing in a tournament style, what would you advise?

It generally goes in 250-point margins. 750 and 1000 are the common points limit, or were last time I checked.

It's personal preference. Some people swear by 500pts. I personally like 1000pts as it allows you to bring fun stuff. 750 is a happy medium in my opinion.

thanks guys. i think we may do a tale of four gamers style of starting at 400, then going to 500 while we get our choices sorted, then going onto larger 750 games?

I would do it more evenly. Maybe 250,500 then 750.

As someone who goes to a lot of the GBHL events the 3 most common point increments are 350, 500, and 750 - I think 750 is the best as every army has the chance to shine, although 350 and 500 are also very good and generally any army can win at any points value - the main factor is how many games you wanna do - you can fit 5 350pt matches into 8 hours of gaming or 3 750pt matches - depends what you'd rather do?

Following on from marsbar's point, in the next 3 months, I'm going to 4 GBHL events. 3 of those are 500pts and one is 350pt. I prefer 750-1000pts as I like taking the bigger heroes etc.

Usually it's:
250, 500, 750 and 1000.
500 would be pretty avrege.
