I recently aquired Boromir Capt of the White tower and after reaching the end of painting the model decided I wanted to kick up the paint-job another notch. This is my first time experimenting with OSL (if it qualifies as OSL with the imagined light-source not being on the model), and I just was looking for any tips to help with this.

In the picture is my current progress thus far, the darker area on his front skirt/kilt thing, his shield, and his chest-plate are all that I have begun to shade. The light source is above, in front and slightly to his left and I do have a physical light I am using to judge what areas to shade and how much to do it.

Again C&C is welcome and appreciated! :)

@Rognarr- thank you for, I am not a fan of the GW red on the goblin clothes, makes them look Christmasy to me lol. I want them to look particularly scavengery to I do lots of browns and rust

@ Dorth- thank you as well, they may be "Targets" but when they are that just helps their allied monsters not be :D

@Gandlaf- thanks for the link. I guess deepening the shadows isn't the way to go. My imagined light-source is the sun, if that helps at all

Yep I think i see what your aiming for here bud. The best way here I think to get the best results is working on the armour as i think this is the area where the light would catch the most on the model with it being a highly reflective surface.

What I would do from this point is wash the armour/metal areas with a one drop devlan mud or whatever its called these days and one drop water mix. Once dry make a mix of one drop water to 2 drops chainmail and highlight the top left (closest to the light source) areas of the metal areas. Once dry again take some mithril silver paint and again just edge highlight the same areas again but leave a little of the previous highlight showing.

The same will work on the tree emblem on his chest plate but i would advise against watering the colour down on the tree design as its likely to pool where you don't want it too.

Take some pure elf flesh and highlight the forehead but try and leave a darker area the further right you go on the model. Same with the bridge of the nose and cheekbones.

The rim of the shield looks good already as you have a silver highlight round the top exactly where it should be. The brown on the shield front is also looking good although a watered down scorched brown around the bottom half of the shield might help to give a little more transition between the highlight and the shade.

Boromirs tunic is awesome already - the highlights are already in the correct places so bring the metal areas into play and there you have it OSL Boromir.

Super Excited to get back to painting, its been about a week (which is a LONG time for me) since I last was able to pick up the brush. I have some major updates today and tomorrow planned so hopefully I'll get them all uploaded.

But first is the pre-painted Shagrat conversion. This is my first significant conversion to a metal mini and I intend to make him a Uruk-hai Scout Captain.

Here's the Pre
Image

and the Post

Image

He's a hand-swap, multiple heavy filing down (shoulder and arm areas) remove his pointing finger (its not polite to point after all). had to cut away and then file down the old Uruk arm in the shield and work some green-stuff magic to fill the gaps. Planning on painting him today so pics should be up soon :)

Thank you Harfoot.

And here's the completed pic (save for the basing) of the new Uruk-Hai Scout Captain!

Image

And here he is with the recently re-painted Lurtz. I've enjoyed painting these two so much I've gone and stripped all my old metal Uruk Scouts and have bumped up the plastics to the top of my "need to purchase" list.

Image

C&C Welcome as always
and unfortunately Lurtz teeth are not showing up in the photos, I had to paint on some top teeth as he looked like he had a serious underbite otherwise lol. Which was a pain because he doesnt have any sculpted

Special Thanks to DMS for all his help with the OSL effects on Boromir, love how he turned out. Couldn't have asked for a better teacher.

Re-painted Hasharin (the inspiration for his colors was the mid-night sky as he is supposed to be all stealth-like)

Cool update! I really like the Mahud King. You've done a good job with a limited palette. Also, your Shagrat conversion is awesome. I've never really liked that he was holding Frodo's mithril shirt and you've done a good job of repurposing the pose.

Keep up the good work!

Thank you very much Jonathan!

As to the Mahud I really want to keep all of them earthy and muted as my Haradrim are all gaudy and over-the-top on their colors. I like the contrast (and it just fits the back-story I invent for EVERYTHING lol)

I totally agree on not liking the pose holding the mithril coat. Its a good capture of a movie moment but when you place it on the gameboard and he's in combat against someone whose actually posed for battle... well he just looks stupid in that moment lol.

Nicely done on the conversions! Glamdring's scabbard should be a dark blue, as should the handgrip.

That's supposed to be a mithril coat? i always assumed it was a net! Either way, neat little conversion- it looks a lot nicer than the original. I like your work. :)

@Dorth -thank you for letting me know about the scabbard, I was unsure so I just painted it brown.

@Gandlaf- thank you, and it is my favorite Gandalf sculpt as well

@Mertaal- thank you, I'm quite a fan of your work as well, especially your Sons of Errl (as Thermo would say lol)
