So last night while I was painting, I noticed while painting the flesh that I got these tiny little lumps in the paint come up I had shaken the bottle before hand and thinned down the paint likes I Always do, but these lumps still seemed to appear. It was while using Cadian Fleshtone (layer paint) on a rather flat piece of flesh on an arm.

I was wondering if anyone knows of how to prevent these little lumps. It annoys me greatly. Thanks

No, that gives a bad result in my opinion. I like highlighting and blending for skin especially. It gives it a lifelike and bright colour, close to the complexion of flesh.

I have to say that this is the first I have heard of this issue!

Do you use water to thin your paints? If so that's your problem, GW paints do not thin well with water. Use the "Lahmian Medium" for that, that should help smooth your paints so they don't have lumps

That may be the problem. I was using water to thin the paint so it didn't obscure the detail. It hasn't happened further while painting today since I haven't thinned any, so maybe it is.

No problem, I'd be careful about not thinning your paints. Even if you don't obscure details it can actually make bubbles on the model (that will pop leaving tiny little craters in the paint) and just other defects because Citadel paints are just too thick initially.

I personally thin my paints on the pallet rather than in the pot if using water. If I am thinning in the pot then use a paint thinner such as medium.

I have never thinned them in the pot, to me that seems like it would be problematic and I always work from a pallet. What's your experience with it? How well does it work for u?

Small lumps in the paint I have encountered too from time to time. I put it down to not cleaning my water enough and leaving the brush i use to add water to paint to thin it out in the water jar for long periods of time causing the coating on the shaft of the brush to fray and tiny parts coming away which i then inadvertently add to my paint mix.

I used to get the same problem with Tamiya paints too...
they need a different thinner as well.

I have thinned GW paints with water for years and had no problem.

Maybe the paint has changed.

But...

I have another solution for you...

I put two buck shot lead pallets in every pot when I open it.

It is like the old nail polish glass bottles that used to have some metal pellets in them.. when you shake them they help to pulverize those lumps out... yes it does work.

I use BB's buck shot I need for buck shot I don't use GW paint but I also use a medium to thin paint on the pallet.

I had the same issue when i painted Eowyn. I was really happy with my result except a few small lumps which made her look like she had acne on her left cheek.
