yes he did, GW sell the blister as ft & mtd.

What's the situation in your local gaming group? If it's just one guy out of a larger group that's getting on your case, then I really don't see any reason for you to scrap the project just to make him happy. See how the other local players feel, and if they're alright with it maybe you can see if people are will to back you up and talk to the player in question. Outside of a GW-only environment (store/tournament), he really has no business telling you what models you can or can't use, as long as you're stand-ins aren't intentionally misleading or an unreasonable substitute for the profile in question.
If he's your only opponent, or one of the club/tournament organizers, then I understand why it's a little more difficult but honestly, I think I'd look for a new club/opponent.
