im a beginner painter noob use started this week and got some questions.

i just bought like 4 uruk hai crossbows for 250HKD(around 30 USD). however for 240HKD (28-9USD) i got like 24 haradim warriors. also the framework for fine cast plastic models is so crappy i need to clip so many plastic spikes away from it making many areas of the model very messy. they got words in the bottom of the model and i need to again spend time clipping them away to fit into the base. the bottom of the model is always melted into the bottom plastic framework and again takes time to clip them away. so just want to know if this is what it has to be done to make the model look better (even I'm not sure how they look better).

how come they say it is a step forward when the old lord of the rings model look a lot more neat in my opinions?

finally 1 more question...the haradim warrios are smaller than the uruk hai crossbowmen...are the fine cast models a little bit bigger or just uruk hai are bigger lol?

The finecast miniatures are supposed to be a better quality then regular miniatures. But there have been, and are, so much troubles with them.

I have only bought a few finecast miniatures and so far they have been good, the scale of them are the same as other miniatures of that range (40K).

I find it that finecast is easier to convert and model them.
The resin is a lot softer then plastic.

Firstly, Finecast models are NOT plastic. The price ramge is clloser to metal than plastic, and the detail on resin is at least equal to metal. (I do npt agree w/ the ludicrous prices though).

The Uruk-ha crossbowmen are the same size as the metal Uruk-hai crossbowmen that they used to sell, metal (and FC) are normally at a heroic scale.

There is a reason they usually say 'finecast' instead of 'Finecast'

finecast, is because some of the troubles people have with it.
Bended stuff, bubbles,.. i once saw a picture of a demon that had some troubles due to gravity over a year or something..
But i am no expert in this stuff, i never bought fartcast. :-)
The salesman of games workshop said they only had troubles in the beginning. But i still don't feel good about that because that guy always try to sell me stuff i don't even need. Luckely he never succeeds in his quest.

I hate "fine"cast! The quality is garbage. I bought two dwarf vault warden teams in metal and two in fc, the spears of the fc always droop. And the iron guard are all deformed and have weapons that sag! I called and complained so they sent me a new pack that was just as bad

You're supposed to fix them. Part of the Gamesworkshop hobby experience, you know. :P

The gen 1 finecast was shoddy and GW admitted that. Was down to the QC and other overlooked details.
I have to say, the new hobbit stuff is much much better. I am yet to return a FC hobbit model and I have a few of them.

Hahahaha another Finecast debate... Most of my problems were with the The Lord of the Rings sculpts that had been previously metal... Almost all of The Hobbit Finecast I have (which is currently the whole range) are pretty good. Not perfect, but almost there and a big improvement... :).

Fine cast has the added property that if you submerse it in hot water, it becomes malleable, and some figures can be convincingly re posed!

I've heard that but would love to see someone post examples of doing so successfully, especially including water temp for others to follow as a guide.

My Gondor Captain had a sword that pulled a tight 180, by putting it the hottest water my fingers could handle (and it was painful), I managed to get it completely straight...for about two weeks. Since then it's had a slight curve but it's not horrible.

What really gets me is the thought of sitting there with my hands burning, while a GW executive snickers behind me says "hehe, and you *also* spent $100..."

The metal miniatures are harder to convert, I never seem to get a spear or sword completely straight, any tips for that?

@ Whafrog: Some GW employees are not customer friendly (there are exceptions), especially compared to local game stores/clubs.

Yay! Another finecast flame thread...

Seriously, I have never had a problem with my finecast models. Hot water works well for straightening and slight reposes. For small corrections I use the hair dryer.

At the end of the day though, I still prefer metal models. Even though building and customize metal is less enjoyable, I like the weight and feel of the metal. It is a personal quirk based on nothing, but I would have all my favorite models metal if I could

Yes I agree, I have been painting some of the old metal Orcs, the weight feels so much better, proper if you know what I mean :-)

Yes,

Light miniatures do feel strange. I shall no doubt be telling my desperately bored Grand Children "That back in the day we had to lift heavy great metal miniatures", and they'll be telling me about their school trips to the rings of Saturn etc!

I have been putting a mix of sand and white glue in the base, it helps a lot with models staying upright, even the tippy metal ones like the warg chief.
