I'm thinking of buying 12 Black Guards of Barad-dur, quite costly I know for 12 but I think they look great pieces. What do people think about them game wise? Are they worth the points?

I used them pre warbands. They were great.
Smashing through D5 and D7 models like they were crepes.

Not sure now. But you just need to get the right balance with heroes n other troops.
ie you won't be fielding many/any super heroes if you are paying 12pts per soldier.

I usually take between 8-10 per game and back them up with morannons. They usually do quite well, as previously said, if you win the fight chances are you'll kill your enemy. I love the captains, they are vicious brutes.

They are good. I have about 16-20 metal Mordor Uruk Hai so I often proxy a few of those as Black Guard. I've seen someone here do some nice conversions with Isengard's Fighting Uruk Hai (IIRC), plasticard and greenstuff. More effort of course and they won't look exact, but a LOT cheaper in the long run (especially since the old plastic Uruk Hai can still be found cheap).

Black Guards are a good idea, just try to support them with spearmen, preferably ones with a strength of 4.

Don't need to bother with extras and stuff if you have them though. Orc Trackers may hep you reduce our pts value

Eg Warband 1:
Captain
4 Black Guards
4 Morannins w/ spear (& shield)
4 Orc Trackers.

Rinse and repeat.

I've had alot of fun with them, 6 per Warband supported by Morannon Orcs is an effective way of breaking an enemy shieldwall. One issue is S4 attacks like Crossbows or other Uruks really hurt them, especially at their points cost. The Black Guard Captain is also good, i've always had him kill more than his points in every game i've played with him. Its also a really nice model.

My opponent plays Gondor with high defence, so wanted to try them out. Would 12 be too many then? We tend to play 750 point games at the moment. I also have lots of Moria and Angmar pieces, so could easily ally in cheap pieces.
