If you want to paint blond or fair hair, the best thing to do is to do a base of averland sunset and then a wash of reikland fleshshade on top.

Well, I was true to my word... and have been smashing it!

Last night I cleaned up and fixed 16 riders of rohan I'd got cheap on ebay, plus a mounted eomer, and mounted erkenbrand got thrown in the dettol to remove the paint.

Primed them all and they're already looking great!

But also decided my second highlighting attempt on the grey company... and much more pleased. Sure, get the magnifying glass out and they won't be the best, but not bad for my first ever completed models.

Here's a quick couple of images and will try do some more when all the bases are finished tomorrow.

Have started painting the green cloaks on the riders of rohan too... I think I might get my two armies finished after all!

Don't sell yourself short. I have been painting on and off for years now and i rarely, if ever, achieve that standard.

Really good work.

That's very generous of you buddy, thanks. I think the most important thing is that I now understand exactly what needs to be done to at the very minimum achieve a certain standard so I'm looking forward to completing the next batch! Thanks again.

Thanks Ranger!

Here is a photo of them all together without bases. Bases were drying overnight. Anyone have basing tips?

Good job! I really like how you did paint them! The dark colours really let them look like rangers/members of the grey company! Good job.
The only thing you could improve maybe is to paint the tree on the banner a bit brighter?

Thief! ;) took inspiration for Crucifer and Monotone_Mat, can't thank you all enough for the bits of advice and encouragement!

Hope the bases do them justice. Think doing the next 12 is going to be much much easier now I've got my head around a few things (and have better brushes!)

Thanks again all!

Great looking Grey Company - the sombre colours are appropriate and I like the little highlights that give depth without being overwhelming. Now, go beat up the goblins!

Thanks Dorthonion! Was really conscious (after being disappointed with first highlighting attempts) to not overwhelm the dark, grim "grey company" scheme that had been achieved with the wash only. I'm glad I gave it another bash; as you say, gives a nice bit of depth to the 28mm model.

Ha funny you should say that about the goblins. I have a client who collects lego who I took to see the Hobbit (for my second viewing) and have persuaded him to give sbg a go so I can get some games under my belt. He really likes the look of the new goblins and is thinking of getting the starter set. I told him I would be happy to contribute and effectively by the good characters so he can focus on evil.

So hopefully will be kicking some goblins asses soon!

If anybody wants to know the colours used for the above Grey Company

Caliban Green, The Fang, Dawnstone, Ratskin Flesh, Rhinox Hide, Leadbelcher... and Agrax Earthshade to wash. 1:1 colour with white for highlights.

Love your models, going to get some rangers soon. However, I do agree with Rognarr that the tree on Halbarad's banner should be brighter as it is a banner, and is supposed to stand out, as that is its job.

Thanks buddy :) Will go over the tree and try and dark grey highlight on the black banner, see if that makes it stand out a touch more.

Also, this model has the banner of arwen evenstar, and the halbarad in your army list does not. Remember What You See Is What You Got (WYSIWYG), unless you are playing with some friend (not competitively), where you could proxie things like this. However, you could not do this in a Tournament...

True, but I'll likely pick up the other version when I get the Arathorn (they come together, right?)I prefer this model for now and won't be entering any tournaments for a while I'm sure!

Thanks for the heads up though!

Yes. Sorry. I just presumed that you already had arathorn as he is In your army list. Just as well really, as they are very hard to get on eBay or anywhere apart from GW
