Being a Helmingas doesn't help when throwing weapons. They all have a flat str of 3.

Oh, well then the usefulness of helmigas in my mind has gone down. But still if you move its 5+ followed by a 6 in most cases.

At the time spears were limited ammo and a model could only throw one per game but at 8" range.
Then they went to 6" range unlimited and then 6" range costing 2pts.

This really hurts Rohan, throwing weapons was the only way to help level the lack of spear support. At least with a 4+ you had a 50% chance to hit, but now if they move they are like an Orc archer. And we know how good orcs are. The insanity that this rule would apply to throwing weapons. Unless it does not apply to throwing spears, which I doubt.
What can Rohan do? I enjoy playing Rohan due to the fluff, and it is always an uphill battle.

Rohan really has been denerfed! The RoR glitch is fixed! RoR don't count towards your bow limit! You can now have a completely mounted RoR force, and every one of them can use their bows!

Well I'll be damned... I never thought I'd see the day! :shock:

Hitting on 5+ does suck big time, though. I still can't comprehend the reasoning for not just making the bow optional... it works for all other units, why not for RoR (and now Rivendell Knights)?

Rohan cavalry should get a +1 fight ability when mounted. That would make them worthwhile. Their current rules don't make them worthy of being called "horse lords". Plus they get butchered easily.

I look forward to trying them out with the changes (longer range for throwing spear and full use of bows on the RoR).

If they are still falling short as before then I think a house rule exception to the -1 Shoot when moving would be a good first step. I really like the idea of trying +1 F if mounted as well.

Those two changes, both relatively 'light' in the scheme of things could go a long way to balance them out.

Here's my de-nerf solution, give them options! Let the foot soldiers get a "shield wall" special rule. When charged units of throwing spears can be used as regular spears. And on horse the player can decide each turn(like elven blades) wether to use it as a lance or a throwing spear.

How about adding a clause to Expert Rider that allows them to move and shoot without penalty? Maybe then the rule would actually be useful rather than situational.

I think it is best to try the current "new" Rohan and see how that plays. If the RoR bow fix does not really fit the bill, I would rather see something like an increase in RoR movement to 12 inches or something like RoR may use a throwing spear as a lance if they do not throw while charging. I think either of those would be enough of another boost to Rohan cav. Where they really suffer is their lack of spear support for foot troops and no real anti-magic anything.

That's actually exactly what I said in another thread. I also wanted to give all Rohirrim models +1 fight when they charge. These 2 little changes would fix them perfectly imo.
EDIT: only mounted Rohirrim get the +1 on the charge.

The bow limit removal is great, I could care less about giving foot troops spears as opposed to boosting their cavalry. With the seige rules the troops hold their own and that's all I could ask for. I almost always ally with Gondor though, just to get lances and heavier armour.
