Hi guys,
I am thinking about converting some high elf blades-men and archers into spearmen.

I wondered if anyone has done this before. If you have, or if you haven't, but have any ideas, please post them here, as it would cost a lot more than it is worth to buy spearmen from anywhere than to convert them.

Thanks,
LordElrond

Hiya I've done some converting with high elves - more the archers and blades to blades and shields but the principal is the same i guess. Pictures can be found here http://www.thedeadmarshes.com/p/imladris.html

Thank you so much
That really helped

This is sort of off the topic, but do you know anywhere to buy high elf shields without buying the spearmen as well?

Thanks

My work might look very boring and bad-painted, but it still might be a bit inspirational to you too.
I've made some conversions of High Elves to Noldor Warriors of Hithlum. I used the Numenoreans' swords and shields for this conversion, I removed the band armour and sculpted chain mail.
You can see them in my Gallery. I have an old article that I made for converting these, but I've not submitted it on the site. Anyway, here's my gallery for now:

I might try a few of my own.

Well, I haven't come around yet to make profiles for them (I'm re-writing a lot of profiles to be more true to the book). The profiles I'll make for them will probably have S4, 2 Attacks and Terror for Orcs. They will be appropriately expensive of course, but I want to recreate Elves that can actually fight Orcs a few times their number.

By the way, this article over on TLA might also be interesting for you: http://thelastalliance.com/wordpress/wp ... ptains.pdf

Good luck with your project and keep us up to date. ;)

If it's still of any help, I've tried this conversion. Two tips:
1 Make sure you drill though the hands before you cut them off. This can get very annoying.
2 It's very easy to make the shoulder pads too fat, resulting in a head buried between the shoulders up it's ears (I've done it).

For the rest, DMS', and Feanor's conversions are far better then mine.

Thanks, of course it still helps. I've just got into the hobby seriously, and am getting tools and things for Christmas, so it won't be until after them.

I'd be grateful for anymore tips you, or anyone else can give.

Also, I think this is the wrong place to ask, but is the GW hobby knife suffiecient for cutting through miniatures?

I have done this already. Check out page 4 of my WIP thread:

viewtopic.php?f=50&t=12790&start=60

The poses are a bit awkward and I cringe about them a little now, but 3 years ago I thought they were pretty neat.

I think it's very important that you get the shoulders right otherwise the poses tend to look unnatrual and awkward.

Anytime.

Well, the arms tend to look quite awkward on mine, but I suppose you could mitigate that by cutting them at the elbow as well (only that will require more Greenstuff work).

I have tried a Stanley knife, it didn't work. I don't know how sharp the hobby knife is by comparison, but I'd recommend a small saw. Hands and weapons and other small bits you can still cut off with the knife.

If you have a sharp hobby knife it should cut through plastic limbs or necks easy enough.
