Yeah, but not so big Gandalf couldn't lop of his head (which is what he did).

Not entirely, as I quoted (see above), Glamdring passed through the Great Goblin's belly.

Okay, that's a good point. I just imagines he meant it like passing through the middle and sticking out at the other side. But if you interpret it like that, that one of my arguments fails.
My others stand though. :P

Ah, right, missed that, thanks.

Well..."right through" could mean chest or neck or...but the point remains, the model's too big.

And anyway, if normal goblins are as small as a hobbit, then how does this individual end up as large as a cave troll?

I actually imagined the great goblin would be 8-9 foot whilst the normal goblins were 4-5 foot. The size is mutation and might makes right. A bit like skaven. (by the way i do NOT play WFB)

That being said Gothmogthe Werewolf - hae you not noticed the goblin captain is SMALLER than the rest? Games Workshop even said it was intentional becaus it made him look tougher (to which I said a swift punt and he's flying - other goblins merely drop to their knees knackers in hand).

Yeah, the tiny Goblin Captain bothers me actually. If there's a character in the film that they based it off of then I can understand (in fact, if PJ has the tiniest Goblin portrayed as the nastiest piece of work during the chase, only to be unceremoniously "punted" as soon as battle commences, I think it would be funny.) Otherwise, I have a Goblin Captain that I will never use as such.

Also, for someone who has the full book: can Goblins take 2-h weapons?

@Hashut's Blessings, yes I did notice the miniscule goblin captain, and like Hurin I think, I have quarms with it. If I even decide to paint mine, i will stick it on a rock or something. It's size makes little sense, unless the Great Goblin protected it, and why on middle-earth would he want to? The only other thing about the goblins that bothers me is that hey don't have bows, when they appear with bows in the fil'm.

Orcs and Goblins with bows are essentially useless now. No volley and 6's to hit if they've moved. Why bother? To the contrary, I'm quite pleased they didn't give me 6 useless models per box.

I would never have used the archers either, but it 'feels right' if they had them. It's neither here nor there though, since they don't have them.

I get the feeling that the Goblin Captain is small because of the "little dog" syndrome, where he more vicious to make up for his small size. I could see him being a suckup to the Great Goblin to keep safe, and the Great Goblin uses him to give orders. While I dislike him too, I'm going to use him because I'm not spending $15 for another captain.

By "little dog" syndrome, do you mean like Napolean complex? (by the way, I know he wasn't actually short)

Yes. I don't like Napoleon complex because he was actually average height. By small dog syndrome, I mean how some of the sweetest dogs are huge (I had a 180 lb, ~85kg, dog that wouldn't hurt a soul), while some of the meanest dogs are tiny.

I agree, both on Napolean, and the samll dogs. Some owners of small dogs shout at us because their dog tries to attack ours and ours is 4 times their size)

And I still don't like the Goblin Captain model.

Woot! A conversation about Napoleon! Ahem, sorry. He's my favourite historical character and I tend to talk a little bit too much about him (as in, as soon as I mention him, everyone zones out).

I concur about the goblin captain.

Gothmog, you could convert Warg Rider bows or Moria bows into goblin bowmen. And I can see a use for them with the "chittering hordes" rule, as a second line that shoots while you close and then joins in the battle.

But would be completely disallowed in the rules.

Napoleon was was of only 2 frenchmen that I respect (well, the second is a group-the French Resistance in WWII).

Lol at the first part.

I might well convert some into archers but they don't have the option unless one was to houserule it. It's not like the bows would be overpowered.

If you like the thought of them having bows then go for it. Easygoing opponents won't mind and just have them count as regular Goblins against sticklers.

Then house-rule :P .

There are actually quite a lot of respectable Frenchmen out there - especially Louis XIV' and Napoleon's marshals. Getting just a little bit off topic here :E .
