I am really looking forward to seeing Greg's latest masterpiece - he is incredibly quick at building these mammoth pieces, but never compromises on quality or detail. He's a legend and a major asset to the club.

As far as I am aware, Mal and I are "ok" these days... warily neutral - not allies, but not attacking each other either. He's even asked me if I want to help towards his extravaganza next year and I haven't said no (or yes). I daresay he'll have big announcements to make at the Open Day regarding all of the events being staged over his historical weekend.

I just received two photos of Greg's Orthanc piece - even as small as they are, the model is gobsmacking!

Check these out...

Ah! Orthanc looks fantastic. And the Black Gate! I wish there was more interest in the game here...

Plus, the best Vietnamese restaurant in Australia is only 10 minutes drive from the club rooms!

I am really looking forward to this event. It's the 40th birthday of one of the oldest wargaming clubs in Australia, and will be filled with enthusiastic gamers both young and hairy. I'll be running a terrain making table all day, working on two or three projects and giving impromptu demonstrations on modelling techniques as I go.

I might also be spending time on the Eureka stand helping my mate Nic out if he needs it (I have my t-shirt ironed).

Day 1 went really well. I thoroughly enjoyed myself, catching up with old friends and meeting such luminaries as the original club president (now in his 80s).

There was a lot of interest in what I presented, but rightly so the traders and the games took main stage. I was talking with a couple of the traders afterwards, Mick Selman and Nic Robson and they were very happy with the day's proceedings.

But for me, the highlights were Pappa_Hoth's magnificent Orthanc and Helm's Deep models. The Helm's Deep was the best I've ever seen and incorporated the GW fortress model into it. And... I got to defend Orthanc from the rampaging Ents (many UKFB ones in there too), so I managed to roll a dice in an LOTR game for the first time in two years. Sorry Greg for seeming a n00b with the rules, it's been so long.

I forgot my camera though, so I have packed it for day two and will get some shots of the tables in between running my own game today.

Thanks Heinz for inviting me, and thanks to you and Greg and Alan and Paul and Simon and everyone at Group North for an excellent day. Looking forward to today.

Hi All, Day 1 was fantastic and despite alan aka dagorlad not having played for two years, it was fun to watch but sadly the ents managed to smash sarumans tower and win the game, only 4 of 16 Ents were killed :o
1 brave uruk crossbowmen killing UK freddy's willow tree on his lonesome having scored two wounds in shooting in first two turns he passed his courage and charged, then in combat won the fight and slew the wooded beast :D He survived two further attacks by other Ents in the following turns before being slain
Day 2 was even better, in total we had 264 visitors over the 2 days
and the 16pdr cannon black powder blast was spectacular, i await alans pics being posted
Pap Hoths Helms deep and my uruk army of 300 models added with gregs and pauls models was an imposing display and won best display award for sunday.
we had a ceremony to recognise the achievement of our club and celebrated 40 years of continuous gaming with an unveiling of an honour board to recognise and honour the many previuos presidents but having many of them in one place was special. can't wait for the photos,
watch for them on www.groupnorth.biz :-D

We won something? That's good news. Yes, I had the privilege of watching Herr Dagorlad's dice rolling in action...it's good to know there is someone with even more 'dice challenges' than myself:-)
Alan, your Aerosans and Dinos game looked a treat...snow, German Armoured train, dino 'in repose' on a flat car and a pile of Soviet aerosans; it looked great. How did it play?

Well, day two was a roaring success too. The quality and quantity of the games that were put on was impressive, and overall 250 people came through the doors - which may not be a lot compared to the larger gatherings in other cities, but it's the biggest wargaming event I've been to in Adelaide in the last 10 years.

But the club members were incredibly friendly and very welcoming, clearly very proud of their club and rightly so too.

I took a few photos on the Sunday and here's some of the better ones:

Thanks to Heinz, Greg, Alan, Paul, Simon, Wendy and all the Group North folks for a brilliant weekend.

Sounds like it was a really good event.

Orthanc and Helms Deep look fantastic in these pictures, and I'm certain they dont do them full justice.

I would have enjoyed playing with that cannon :-D
Looks like a great event. I rate that with a jealousy factor of 7.95...
