Painting Challenge: Gandalf!

Hello everyone! Welcome to the thread for the October Painting Challenge!

Rules

1. A miniature is decided upon before each monthly painting challenge, this months' being Gandalf. It is not required that you paint this mini, however it is preferred. Here is a list of preferred miniatures in order of most preferred to least preferred:

  • Any Gandalf
  • Any other Wizard

If you are unsure as to whether something will be eligible for entry, just post asking or PM me and I will let you know whether or not you may use it, as this months challenge could be open to many different alternative figures.

2. To enter the painting challenge, the miniature you are painting must not be painted before starting and picture proof must be shown of the miniature 'pre-painted' (unprimed, undercoated or if you are repainting and old miniature - in its' original paint scheme) otherwise your entry will not be eligible.

3. You may join the painting challenge in progress at any time, but must submit photographs of the completed miniature by midnight GMT of November 3rd, 2012. WIP images are welcomed and encouraged. A maximum of 4 photos please, this allows you to show your miniature off from front, back and each side which is more than enough.

4. Miniatures that are completed in time will be eligible to win the challenge. The challenge winner will be decided by the vote of the OR community. The community will choose one winner and one runner-up from the completed miniatures. Votes should be cast not simply on painting skill, but on merit, including creativity, application of painting techniques, artist improvement, etc. There is no prize available for the winners of this challenge, the challenge is solely for community participation and as an incentive for people to reduce their backlog and improve their painting skills.

5. Winners from the previous month are able to participate in the next months painting challenge, but they are not eligible to win in consecutive months.

Good luck to all!

 This time I shall participate- let's hear it for Gandalf on a cart!

Though I'm going to need help figuring out how to post photos...

1. Take some photos
2. Upload them to your computer
3. Make an account on photobucket (or similar free image hosting service)
4. Upload the desired photos to your photobucket account (so now they're on the Internet)
5. Start writing the One Ring post you want to include the photos in.
6. Copy the photobucket link location of the photos, and paste this information in the body of your post.

(It will look something, but not exactly like this: [img]http:///i851.photobucket.com/albums/ab71/patisarat/LOTR/IMG_0198.jpg[/img]. The [img] tags make it display properly as an image in your post)

6. Sit back and bask in all the approving unconditional support from One Ring members!

@tomogul- Thanks! I was trying a while ago, but didn't spend the necessary time playing with it to get it work. It shouldn't be a problem now. :)

Well I just happen to have a Gandalf figure on the table in the queue for painting, so I might just bump him to the front so I can enter my first ever challenge....

Here's my proof pic

Here's my proof pic...Gandalf the Grey on Shadowfax. I intended to start this about 18 months ago for WotR, but put my Rohan army on hold for other life priorities so he went on the shelf. No time like the present to recall to the front of the backlog... 8)

Thought I'd give it a shot this month with a Gandalf conversion. Had a spare model lying around but didn't like the pose!

I once got a butchered Gandalf for free in a trade.
But I'll need a small miracle to patch him up.

@shieldmaiden, well he's got a staff and uses magic, sounds like a wizard to me..

I'm gonna try to paint at least 1 lotr-miniature this year... so I'll give it a chance.
This one has been primed white for several years and has been waiting so long to get painted...

Gandalf the White...

Here's my proof pic, including Saruman the White and a Radagast conversion. One of these will be my entry.

Put it in, wait a day, put it under a hot tap, and rub the paint off with your finger (hand soap gets the paint off your fingers when you're done). Then, to get rid of most of the gloop, put it in again for 5 days, and repeat.

The instantly recognizable Dettol odour is a disadvantage, yes, but it's that or having your figure eaten alive with plastics... (unless you're in a country with Simple Green).

I don't know yet which one I'm going to paint, Gandalf the Black or Gandalf the White.

Thought I'd get started on my entry today. Here it is, a converted Khazad-dum Gandalf:

Image

I'm particularly proud of the face! Oh and I've only painted his main torso; the limbs are a bit off-colour because I used gin to remove a messed up undercoat... :P
