The Hobbit Release thread

Well I've decided that I won't be buying any more minis until then. After that, we'll see what appeals to me. I have 26 Dwarves on the table now and another 30 to follow afterwards. Along with Gandalf for the Comp, that's 57 minis I'm aiming to have done by month's end.

I don't know whether to be excited or worried for more Dwarves. I just counted, I have 58 bare plastic/metal/resin, 12-24 unassembled and 163 in need of stripping. Ugh... :sad:

On that note, how large was the biggest batch paint you guys have ever tried?

You ask the biggest batch paint I've ever tried? Well, let's see- I think I re-did all 70 something of my woodelves in a day at one point. I've done 50 or so a couple of times, but I'm going to be doing something similar again (even before the Hobbit comes out).

Ouch, 163 is a bit more- that would take me a couple of days to get through.

200?!?! Wow, gotta say I'm impressed, no way I could do that, hell Valamir's 70 Wood Elves impressed me! I think back when I was big into Warhammer (about 10-15 years ago) I might've done batches of 20-30 but nothing like that.

Since getting hack into LOTR I think the biggest batch I've done has been about 15 :-)

doesn't really compare does it? :-)

How long did it take to paint 200 as a batch? Did it not drive you insane?

I wish I had 200 unpainted mine's at a time...

My biggest batch was 12 Dwarves at at time. Not really comparing up, huh?

Definitely came out a month before the film. I remember they had a cave troll in my GW and I was freaking out that it was gonna be pink in the film. There was a load of minis floating about the shop before they were on sale too, got a few sneaky looks at them. And I went to a preview night in october too to showcase the new system.

To do 200 hundred together it took me just over a month. Not insane, although I did want to give up after the first week, see below for further...

@12 Telchar! well at least you can spend more time on each one. On several occasions I've come to the end of a layer in a large batch only to notice I've forgotten something important. For eg, on a smaller batch of 80 models, I completed missed teh face on one of them, No skin lbase, layer, wash, eyes or anything. And later when I was doing the bases, sompletely misses one. I've done it before too, and had to finish them later.

I am duly impressed, Gothmog. Very, very nice. Though, if I manage to do what I wish to with the coming week (not this one, but the one after) then I shall have painted over 200 models in the course of said week- very different models, though. And that implies that my thesis is in such a state to permit me to paint such in that type of time period. I do believe the 70-or-so were done over the course of about two days. As it is, right now, Wargames Factory is my friend. By the way, if you want Haradrim, their Persians are very nice. And lookie here...

Found that awhile ago. Needless to say, I decided to fix the Haradrim problem (I'm always short on them) once and for all.

As for the Hobbit Minis, I don't know when, but I am very, very hopeful.

By the way, in case this wasn't posted earlier, from the other One Ring we have the "Games Workshop Miniatures List," posted about a month ago, which many of you have no doubt seen.

Wasnt that the list that was declared unofficial/ fake by GW? all seems familiar to me and that list is the only place I have read about these before...

yes, but in all honesty they have to say that ebcause we, the public, aren't supposed to know about this stuff yet. Warner has an embargo on things from films 2 and 3. I'm not totally convinced that it is fake yet.

You know, back in the day a movie not generating much buzz and publicity was a sign of low budget or foreshadowing its' poor quality. Somewhere along the line, super-secrecy became the primary tool of the blockbuster marketing program. For some films I can understand this, but for an adaptation of a 75 year-old book? It's not like anyone will see stills of Smaug and go "holy $#!* there's a DRAGON in it?! :shock:

I may be alone, but I like seeing the characters and sets beforehand. It gets me more excited for the final film, whereas the blatant "we can't show you bugger all" kind of frustrates me.

Well, I still don't spend too much time on them (and I know the feeling of suddenly having missed something), I just do 2-3 batches a day (when I paint for a day, not 5 minutes...)

Aw man, spoiler alert!

I loved sneaking peeks at the sets and costumes of the LOTR, I just wish there were more shots out there of the Hobbit.

I can confirm November the 3rd is a release date! GW aren't allowing us retailers to put up pre-orders just yet, expect them to go up Saturday 27th October at the earliest I think.

One has to wonder if they'll adopt a similar strategy to Dark Vengeance and release a Limited Edition version first, pushing the standard's release forward to November 10th. With so much time to spare before the film's release, I wouldn't be surprised at this.

November's White Dwarf will certainly contain a large feature on The Hobbit and retailers order it on the 22nd, its released Oct 27th but orders from myself will probably be with you on the 26th =D (this is the part where I blow my own trumpet...) November's White Dwarf can be pre-ordered here, the only reason I mention this is because now until Sunday my website is doing a free gift with all pre-orders
