They've revealed the picture of Thranduil in the Unexpected Journey annual and footage of filming the dwarves in barrels in the video blog, so this has to to be where the first movie ends or just before.

So that leaves going to Lake Town, heading up to erebor, smaug opening up a can of woopass and the battle of the five armies for the final films? It actually seems like plenty of material for two films with a bit of filler in between!

Don't forget The White Council versus The Necromancer.

Apparently there is no LOTR content at all in the new White Dwarf.

I believe that they will end the first movie when the dwarves are captured and shut in thranduils kingdom. Great suspenseful moment.

That was before three films were announced.

The 1st film will most likely end after Gwaihir rescues them from the Goblins and Wargs, and the second one after Smaug flies off perhaps.

If they follow LotR, then they'll each end after a hard fought battle with the main characters getting ready to continue their journey. I think that pt 1 will end with Gwaihir saving them, maybe with them on their way to Beorn's house or right when they're about to enter Mirkwood. At any of those points, you get a recent battle, them having a good outlook on things to come and at the same time a brooding feeling. Pt2 should end with either Smaug dying or the White Council driving the Necromancer out (maybe both) with the first signs that the BoFA is coming up. Then pt 3 of course ending with Bilbo returning, and (fingers crossed) Bilbo saying something about stuff that's happened since, like maybe some stuff about Aragorn.

Draugluin is guessing about the same as me. Just prior to Beorn for the first. Death of Smaug for the second (maybe including assault on Dol Guldur). Bilbo's return for the last.

As long as they keep the opening ("In a hole in the ground...") and the ending ("But you are really just a little fellow, in a wide world after all." "Thank goodness!"). Can't mess with those...

Since it's Bilbo reading his book to Frodo, I don't think they'll have those quotes as they appear in the book. I bet it'll start with Smaug destroying Erebor, then have Bilbo giving a little overview either to Frodo or like it was in Fellowship, where he's just going over his book while waiting for Frodo to come in or something.

There was something in the videoblogs about Dale, before Smaug arrived and being destroyed. There may be a bit of history telling interspersed with the main timethread of all 3 films.

I already signed up for the beta. I really hope the Boar riders only have a small part in the movie. Although, now we have dwarf cavalry that can be considered about as canon as Watchers of Karna.

This is worse than anything GW has come up with, even worse then the Haradrim cities.

Did Tolkien ever make any vague mention to boars being mounted?
