When the Wood Elf finecast commanders set comes out (no idea when), do you think GW would ever use the unreleased banner bearer? I know it's highly unlikely, but I think it looks a lot better than the current one (which is pretty much a converted sentinial). Just want to see everyones thoughts
I saw it in minimans collectors list here: http://gondolin.miniman.hu/pdf/unoffici ... de_3.0.pdf

I disagree that it looks better. The pose is completely unnatural. There is no reason for the elbow of his right arm to be up that high at a right angle to his shoulder, with his hand much lower. Try it. It is very uncomfortable. I'm sure I'll begrudgingly be copying the imperfections no doubt for DMS at some point unless he finds one before then though. :o

In addition to UKFB's misgivings about the sculpting standards, I'd also say the pose is less nice-looking. That, coupled with that fact that it hasn't been released, and the poor sculpting, means it probably won't get used.

Look at the other arm, it looks like both elbows are pointing upwards. Definitely an uncomfortable pose.

I would hardly say that an unrealistic pose and poor sculpting (not sure about that in this case as I've never seen one of these up close) would stand in GW's way of putting out a model. Look at the original Arwen or their first attempt at the Twins. I could honestly see GW releasing this as a FineCost only at some future point just for the revenue it would generate (no sculpting overhead to pay for as it's been around a long time...just mold creation and production).

I do agree with the arm portion of it, but the sculpt is so much more original. the current one is just a wood elf sentinial with an arm swap, and it bothers me that GW would do that. it's kinda like Drar and the metal dwarf archer

GW re-uses models a lot.

A mate of mine once sold murin and drar mistakenly as 2 dwarf warriors because of the similarties. We both wondered why they went for more than we were expecting.

I might sound stupid for this, but does GW use computer programs to make moulds now or do they still scuplt them by hand (or both)?

Yes and no. Most of their minis are now sculpted (by hand) 3 times the size, which are then scanned and scaled down with the molds being digitally programmed/cut from the original data.

well that's just cheating! I know I can't sculpt well at all but they are professionals, you'd think they could do the actual size of the sculpt....

Does it really make a difference if they scale down larger casts digitally? Seems like it would save time to make a big one (considering how clumsy humans are) and have a computer make the small one for you and that it would also help in terms of detail too.

Exactly. Doing sculpts larger means that a higher level of detail can be created. Fortunately for us sculpters there are still plenty of other manufacturers who still use actual size masters to pop in a mold. Plus private commissions always need to be actual size too to fit in with exsisting manufactured minis.

So with some of the plastic sets like wood elves, are the parts that look just completely connected where they shouldn't be (cloaks to tunics, cloaks to weapons, etc...) is that because of bad scanning or just bad sculpting?

Neither. That is due to the need for even flow of plastic around the mold, and to aid in removal of the sprue from it afterwards. Certain parts require bridging to form properly, and without the bridge, these parts would be impossible to remove from the mold without cutting it into several pieces. There is a way around it if you are happy with minis that come in 5 different bits that you have to build yourself, but GW seem to prefer one piece minis with perhaps the exception of an arm or two here or there that you have to glue on.

Ah, I do so hope for the day of customization and models of 5-6 pieces.

I much prefer the multi-piece sets. not only do they look a lot better but I think it's kind of fun putting models together and it makes them easier to convert
