hi all

in the near future i am going to play againt my brothers ent (thanks UKFB, looks great 8) )
he will be playing the ent all by itself and i will be playing isengard
this lead me to the question: how do you destroy an ent?

heres a rough list i have thrown up for the job:

Warband 1 8/12
Orc Captain with shield;
3 Uruk-hai Warrior with Crossbow;
3 Uruk-hai Warrior with Shield;
2 Orc Warrior with Spear;
=
120pts

Any advice on killing an ent? help with the list would be apreciated
i figuered that the defence of my troops didnt matter anyway so i went for all out strenth which would help against the ents defence 8

You can't kill my Ents. I enchant them all before dispatch. :P

Seriously though, I would have said mounted Saruman, but as you don't have enough points for him, what you have is ok. Keep your warriors back with the crossbow men whilst they can shoot, then when the time comes, your best bet is to charge them all in together to try and surround/trap him.

Lol this is so funny. My bro and I played a 120 points match using our newly painted Ent for the first time last week. The trick I think is to rush in as fast as possible so he won't throw stones at you. I would include stuff with two attacks. I remember besides the generic captain he had two iron guards and two warriors with shield (although the correct thing would be to add a two-hander in there. He won the both turns and my Ent was kaput.

Ferals with pike support should win the fight (and do some damage) while Berserkers ought to be able to finish it off. Of course, that is expensive, so I would say skip the ferals but definitely bring some berserkers.

Okay, you hit the nose with the crossbows. Those things have often left my ents with 1 wound left before combat even begins. What I would do is get your crossbows read and shoot over the shoulder of your other units. If he stoops for stones, take them like a uruk. There is a good chance he will miss, and even if he does hit, there will be a 2/6 chance you will be fine. So let him throw all day as you pelt back with crossbow fire. When the time comes for melee, spread your units out and make those crossbows as unappetizing as possible. You want him to go after your other units. If you win priority, start rolling for courage. Odds are, you are going to fail alot. You are evil after all, lots of low courage models, so expect alot of "fear" struck units. This makes a swarm near impossible. As such, get a single model to succeed then move your other units around as you can. If you choose, spear support the poor guy in the combat, but if not, shield. SHOOT INTO COMBAT! If you kill your poor sacrificial lamb, oh well. He was pretty much dead anyways.

If all that fails and all you are left with is the crossbows and hero or shield and spear and hero or any other combination and it still hasn't fallen, then try for a surround. But that is tantamount to suicide.

That's where berserkers shine.

I'd take a Shaman and 11 Orcs with two handed weapons.

Swarm onto the ent as fast as possible, and in a round where a reasonable number of orcs pass their courage test, transfix him with the Shaman and hammer the trapped fellow with two handed weapon. The risk will be running out of orcs before a decent number pass the courage test, but I'd bet on the orcs rather than the Ent.

Get the shaman to cast fury first so they auto pass courage? then try and transfix.

Ents are very much like trolls and really aren't that bad if dealt with appropriately, especially if they are solo.

If it's a generic Ent you're not going to have much trouble. Techniques above are good. I'd prefer not to rely on the XBows personally. Berserkers have a high courage, good defense, 2 attacks and can swing 2H so 2-3 of them would really help. You'll have to decide if a Captain or Shaman is more effective for you. Fury + Transfix will go a long way to making the rest of your Orcs / Urks more potent against the Ent, but a Captain helps with the damage itself and can help you win the Fight roll (critically important). I do think the Shaman with a couple 'zerks and Urks backed with Orc spears would be a good group. Either way you go though, keep tight and use terrain to your advantage while closing.

If it's his only model would it be a generic Ent or Treebeard? If Treebeard then you have a tougher time as it has M/W/F and is a more effective fighter.

In a way the ent alone has an advantage as there is no break point for him, but really I think the game will come down to who rolls the most 6's meaning if the ent rolls 6's in the battles he will win outright + kill alot but if the crossbows can roll the 6's to wound then the ent will be in trouble too, should be a fun game though

Berserkers can really dish out some damage to ents as Draugluin said but still use a shaman so you can cast spells and avoid damage
heres what i would put for the job

4 berserkers
1shaman
and leftovers on crossows so u have some shooting to
