How easy do you think it would be for a Ranger of the North to track a Warg pack and kill a single Warg on his own? The reason being that I want to qualify the elitism and hero status of the Rangers over ordinary rangers or dunedain with an initiation test. I was considering sculpting pelts for the Rangers and starting an Arnor army based around these elite warriors.

In gaming terms? easy peasy, wargs fall over like bowling pins when hit. Fluff wise, not too hard I guess. Depends on the warg, obviously a sick warg or younger one may be easier to track and fell than say the alpha male.

He might get the warg, but the rest of the pack would get him afterwards, I think.

Also, killing an animal seems overall a "primitive" initiation for Dunedain. I'd be thinking more like night-long vigils or something like that...

I'm thinking fluff wise. I want my Dunedain to have achieved something to earn their hero status. Although this is only a justification in my head it has to make sense to me. Maybe they have to kill the chieftain.

doesnt successfully protecting the shire count? I would give a Dunedain at 40% of killing a warg chieftain.

Well yeah it would, but I want something physical to sculpt onto the Rangers like a pelt.

Surely killing a Wight or or other evil spirit would be more testing.

I did think that, hard to sculpt the skin of an immaterial spirit into cloak though.

How about a star, the symbol of Arnor, on their front armour?

They already have a star of Arnor as their cloak broach. I think I'll go with the warg thing and accept the niggling issues that I have with it.
