Begun working on the front side of Sammy..

If i get some hours of work on him tommorow, maybe he'll be ready for the painting challenge :D
(though I don't know if my first pic is enough proof to participate)

Love the sculpt of this model too.

One of the best sculpts i worked on so far.. lot's of detail both at his back and shirt/chest area and a pretty dynamic pose 8)

Some new angles of Sam and a list of the colours I used, explaining the concept that I had in mind and looking for some constructive critisism.. (accidentally posted before post was finished pf, editing now  )

Here's the Sam I had in mind.. Dirty/Dark/Angry Looking Sam going to save frodo..

Image

"That's for frodo!
And for the shire!
And that's for my old gaffer!"

He had 2x swords in this particular scene, but my sculpting skills are pretty much non existent, so I tried to keep it as simple as possible conversion wise..
First mini I've tried to paint in a display standard and second total, after 10 years, so the blending and picking up the colours myself was enough of an experiment and progress for the moment.
(sorry little Sting, i promise I'll try OSL on you)

Cloak:
base: 50-50 mix of fortress gray and codex gray
shadows: codex gray adding chaos black and snot green (though the adding green experiment didn't really work out, I think there's a graygreenish colour somewhere in GW's list I should try to replicate)
highlights: fortress gray, up to almost white (don't know if I overdid it, the overall look still feels pretty dark to me and all the articles I read were "use more contrast, use more contrast  )

Skin/Face: (from darkest to lightest)
-bestial brown
-50-50 bestial elf flesh
-1 part bestial 2 elf flesh
-almost pure elf flesh (with just a little bestial)

Hair: (from darkest to lightest)
-bestial brown
-snakebite leather (drybrushed)
-bleached bone (drybrushed)

Shirt: (from darkest to lightest)
-graveyard earth
-kommando khaki
-bleached bone
-bleached bone + white

Base:
Greenstuff Sculpted Road + PVA glue with dirt from outside my home (time was ticking)

Stuff that need's some touch ups + next project:
-Weathering the Cloak
-Touching up the feet
-Too afraid to add OSL Sting yet, poor plastic Sam is gonna be the guiney pig
-Maybe getting the hair to be a little brighter, but kinda risky they're gonna loose their dirty look

I have a large scale project in my mind of recreating this scene, but it'll take a while to be able to make terrain and use lightsources

If I had Codex Grey I'd steal the idea of the cloak for my King's Champion..
To bad I don't have it..

Great work! 8)

You can easily make it if you have black and white.. codex gray is 2x parts white 1x part black!

Thanks a lot 8)

I'll give it a try, once I got a new pot of skull white, mine has dried out xD

This is a project I'd like to share with you guys.. after all it's a WIP
So voila, the thing that keeps me away from painting!
I present you the University of Patras formula student car! 8)

Image

You can find more pictures in our site, or on facebook
(http://www.facebook.com/UoPRacing)

Luckily I had also some time to paint a bit..

A freehand experiment:
I don't know if I should use lots of dilluted coats, or a single crude one..
Uruk's were not the best painters around middle earth..

Image

Since I still owe you some pics and touch ups on Sammie, I'll share a little secret with you about my next project.
It'll include a mini from Ebob, some scenery from Thomarillion and of course a couple of GW models..
A rough scetch of the scene, let's see if anyone can find it..

Just a little update to what I'm up to lately..
Placed my order on Ebob and waiting the quote on Thormarillion items..
I'm back to painting my Uruk's, but I find they're not the most motivating figure's around..

Anyway, a picture of an Uruk with some damage on his shield (though I think I overdid it a bit, looks like his shield was hit by a 5 meter sword..)

Image

And starting to work on my Witch King (which will be a part of the diorama I'm planning)
Amazing sculpting on the cloak.. so much recesses.. good thing it's black or it would take forever to paint..
Btw, does anyone know when you do OSL on a model, do you paint it normal first and then paint the light or you gotta paint them together?

Image

Also, I went though all the people's WIP's (though some pages on the old ones were missing or appearing multiple times)..
Great source of inspiration, my Lotr Pics folder got a loot bigger.. :-D

Whenever I've painted OLS schemes on my models I add them after the model has been painted...but I am no master of that effect, better to get someones take on it that is a better painter than I am.

Hm, the item's colour should be under the lightsource colour, so I guess that's the way to do it..
I'm reading some articles atm..
Lets see..

Added Blazing orange, blood red and finally some Black..

Some highlights/shading on the torch, not entirelly happy with it

Also, I basecoated the cloak with Snot Green, but I want it to have a more warm/brown colour.. any ideas?

Looking forward to seeing Aragorn done, I think the Weathertop sculpt is my favorite of the "Strider" sculpts.

It is a pretty amazing sculpt, the boots are my favourite part!
Although there's a strange "cut/worn out part" where the red arrow and the line are

I made some touch ups in the flames.. They is now less white as you move away of the heatsource and more orange/red..
It's visible in the first picture..
And an inspirational song for painting flames http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtknX95emMQ

Catachan Green was spot on! exactly the colour I wanted ! 8)
I kept adding browns to Snot Green and got really weird colours.. then I tried to replicate Catachan green, added a little red and dadah! :D
Thanks a lot for the advice!

I'm also using gandalf's sword as a test subject for NMM..

Since I have really bad light in the desk im painting, I came up with marking the spots where there should be a colour change..

Image

Now trying to replicate the effect on the other side is going to be hard :(

The worn line on Aragorn's overcoat is just the seam - where the natural lines of sartorial skill happen to fall.

The sword is looking good, btw.

Flames are looking great now!
Really glad the suggestion of the Catachan Green helped! That is what I used on my Aragorn and Rangers of the North.

Aha! I'd expect a king to have a better tailor :P
Tried finishing the sword today.. other side wasn't successful and I'm trying again now.. this NMM is pretty hard and time consuming..

Thanks for your kind words :-D

Bad thing was I only have Snot and Goblin Green, so I have to mix both the shadows and the highlights for Catachan..
I had some empty little bottles from BGIME mags so I kept some of it in case I need to retouch, cause boy it's hard to mix paints from the pots..

So here are the shadows on the cloak and some green highlights.. not sure how I'm gonna pull off the highlights from the flame yet..
I'm gonna first try it on the hair area, which will be easier to fix if things go bad..

My suggestion would be, if you have an imaging software such as paint shop pro/fireworks/photoshop, to experiment with coloured lighting in it - by setting a radial gradient of a colour, or even an image of flames, over a green/brown background, you'll see how the colours change naturally.
