I tried the over spray method suggested by Lotrsenerybuilder.
I am not sure yet if it turned out well enough for Mirkwood. It will certainly be alright for the Halloween village.
Image
I built a small screen sifter from 1/4 inch hardware cloth and scrap lumber to separate the saw dust. I made my first quart size batch of purple from the screened dust.
I am experimenting with coloring Spanish moss today. It seem a little harder to do. It might be worth buying it pre colored from the craft store. I tried using a spray can but I not use what will happen to the moss when the paint drys.

If you would like to match more normal flocking colors I would suggest using leaf and olive green or even Kelley green. The point of the odd colors is to make flowers and give some color to some of the monotone gray rocks.

Really like your flower boxes and plants...very cool! :)

As for the "color test", what is it supposed to be exactly?

I tried some different tree colors. I wanted to know if they were too weird or too garish. Does the combination look good or do the all natural trees look better. :?:

Both look fine, but if it is the movie feel you are going for then the colored variety looks closer to the mark if you ask me (which you did indirectly).

Both the natural and colored pieces look fine. :)

I will pin these in and experiment on the flocking.
Please make comments. The colors seem off! Please make more suggestions

Suggestions eh? Well, in this last picture I'd lose the green. The trees and vines look dead so I would go with a dead leaf scatter and bleached out grass.

I think it will be better with the colored flocking added. The movie stills have purple, blue, green, red and yellow that i can see.

I tried to make purple it turned out lavender. The grape sawdust turned out ok. If it was 40K I would go with it. I will add more brown and some dark green. Thanks for the suggestions I will post several more times before I start gluing.

I am going to use more natural colors on the unpainted trees. The green Spanish moss was made with neon green glow in the dark paint.
Thanks

Hey, dont forget that PJ has "over coloured" to make up for the colour loss on 3D filming, so the film is going to look less brightly coloured than the sneeked photos! He mentioned it on one of his blogs.

I like them but would prefer a more gradual change of colours for the trees, but that could just be my eyesight :?

I saw that too. I may be able to do something with lights as well. This is the first try. The input is great :!: Don't hold back :!:

Thanks, one of my railroad buddies reminded me of a trick that might tone the color down. I need to make some this week end.

The wine color made much better fall leaves. I will make some yellow ocker colored flocking next. I have a bottle of straw color paint I am going to try too.
I need more feed back on the tree colors. It has been helpful so far.
