Recently, I have played many smaller battles. These are usually to save time and consist of around 300 points.
My inventory:
Heroes- Theoden (mounted), Eomer (foot and mounted), Gamling w/ banner (foot and mounted), Captain ( foot)
Warrior- 24 WoR (8 bow, 8 spear), 16 RoR (5 spear), 6 Royal Guard (3 spear), + 1 Banner and 1 Horn

I know that in order to create more diverse lists, I need to add some more models, but I have only recently started playing again and this is what Ill have to use.

250 point army
Warband 1-
Theoden mounted with heavy armour
4 RoR w/ spear

Warband 2-
Captain w/ armour
3 Royal Guard
4 WoR w/ shield (1 with spear)
______________________________ 13 total units, 4 bows, 250 pts

300 point army
Warband 1-
Theoden mounted w/ heavy armour
3 RoR w/ spears
3 RoR

Warband 2-
Captain w/ armour
3 Royal Guard w/ spears
6 WoR w/ spears and sheilds
_____________________________ 17 total units, 6 bows, 304 pts (will have to drop spears for a WoR b/c over 1/3 bow limit)

500 point army
Warband 1-
Eomer Mounted
5 RoR w/ spears
3 RoR

Warband 2-
Gamling w/ Standard
3 Royal Guard w/ Spears
3 Royal Guard

Warband 3-
Captain w/ armour
8 WoR w/ spears and shields
2 WoR w/ shields

I have included options such as dropping Royal guard to gain more WoR and replacing heavy armour on Theoden w/ a shield to gain spears. OR in other cases, drop spears to gain armour . With these smaller point values, I find it unreasonable to add the other banner or the horn blower. Also, with Gamling I plan to keep him close to my Captain. And when Eomer and his horsemen charge in, the three heroes will be fighting side by side so as to take advantage of Gamlings banner.

Theoden is pretty pants unfortunately :( you'd probably be better off proxying him as a captain or using the standard king of men profile for him :/

I would not play theoden unless you also have him on foot, he is also not the greatest hero. I think this list will do about as well as can be expected. The throwing weapons will be your biggest friend, maximize their use. Protect your royal guard until hand 2 hand since they are the fight 4 units. Without strength 4 you will have a hard time against d6, but hopefully you will maximize your chances to win combats. In this case do not be afraid to use your captain to help win fights, use his might to call heroic moves to maximize the throwing weapons.

Warband 1 10/12
Éomer, Marshal of the Riddermark with Shield;
3 Rohan Royal Guard
1 Rohan Royal Guard with Throwing spears;
6 Warrior of Rohan with Throwing spears; Shield;
----
Warband 2 10/12
Captain of Rohan with Shield;
2 Warrior of Rohan with Throwing spears; Shield;
2 Warrior of Rohan with Bow;
6 Warrior of Rohan with Shield;

2 bows, are you high? If your playing 300pts go for this:

Warband 1:
Eomer mounted with shield
6 royal guards (3 spears)
6 archers

Warband 2:
Captain with 1 bit o' equipment
5 rohan warriors with throwing spears
5 rohan warriors with shield
2 archers

What you really want to get hold of is: more troops (obvs) and merry and eowyn, eowyn is better than a captain and costs less, merry is cheap and lets you get more troops on the field, menaing you can spend more points on getting super eomer, who is a tank.

That goes over the bow limit Mr Marsbar.

I was going on the posters request to build a 300 point army from what he had available. Now I have two bows because I would rather have strength 3 throwing weapons. Especially with the new deployments allowing combat on turn 1 or soon after, so having bow only troops in a high number is a waste in this case.
Merry is an Independent hero and can not lead troops, eowyn is good for cheap might but has only one attack and one wound, she is no combat hero and she must have a horse if you do plan to use her which places her into rohan captain point territory. As far as future plans I would consider Grimbold over eowyn/captain to give access to S4 and Erkenbrand instead of eomer.

No, they don't
at least, i don't think so...
I'm pretty sure they dont otherwise couldnt accually play with the rohan warriors box set because there would be too many bows

Even with the new rules shooting isn't ineffective. It still has more range than a throwing weapon and maximising your projectiles will always be more effective than not doing so.

Have to agree, throwing spears are way to go. I have tried both Eowyn and a Captain, and found that the more that I use her the more she grows on me. Having Merry with her, other than having the theatrical value works out well...
For the love all the is holy, take Eomer, Knight of Pelennor Fields, with his charge he jumps from an okay hero to a superstar. He has almost same stats as King Elessar, with 1 pt of courage, wound 4+, a might every turn but that is at half the cost

Eowyn has fight 5, meaning, unlike a rohan cap (or grimbold) she will outfight uruks and draw with uruk caps, pair her up with some men and you will have an effective method of outdoing the majority of evil heroes. If you take her you can probably afford another 1-3 soldiers aswell instead of a captain. I don't think she necessarily needs a horse but i see the logc behind it. In my opinion, as an experienced rohan player, Eowyn is the best model available to a rohan player.

I do mean to buy Eowyn because she makes for a good cheap captain. I don't yet have the new rule book for "free people's", but I have heard mention of Helmelingas? Not sure who they are. And red shields? Guess I need to buy more models.

Rohan is in the "Kingdoms of Men" book, not the "Free Peoples" book.

'red shields' is just an upgrade that you can give RoR or WoR if you have Erkenbrand in your force
'Helmingas' is another upgrade for WoR if you have Grimbold in your force

'Red shields' give +1 fight value for 1 extra point each
helmingas gives +1 strength for 1 extra point each

i hope this clears things up 8)

I haven't got the new rulebooks, can WoR model be a Helmingas and a Red Shield or only one?

Hmmm...
I'm not sure as i haven't got a new rulebook either, but I would have thought you could only have one upgrade

Actually, I've just check my army builder and I'm pretty sure 'redshields' is only availible to the riders of rohan not to WoR so that clears things up. :-D

Regular Rohan archers can be converted to Outriders with a greenstuff plume on the helmet---maybe a cloak. 3+ accuracy is well worth it.
