i've noticed that gold coins are mentioned quite a bit
What are they?

I don't know either but I'd like to find out too ::)

Before the side was hacked, there was a system in wich you could earn gold coins for writing articles and posting helpful information.
It wil probably return once the site has been restored.

Nothing, for now.

As aqan mentioned, they are no longer on the site due to the hacking. When there was a use for them, they served no real purpose other than being a more fun and personalised way of managing the ranking system (instead of the common post ranking system, which is the default and is currently in place). You gained gold coins for writing articles that made it to being published in the article library and for donating to the site. Other members and staff members could also give you coins for being helpful or posting relevant news. These coins could be used to either buy items for your profile or to donate to other members. Items were what raised a person's rank. Upon gaining 12 items (if I remember correctly) you would gain a rank, buy another 12 and you would gain another rank, and so on.

They might return once the website has been fully redesigned, as all of the data for who had what items and how many coins each member had is still intact. Whether they actually do or not I don't know.

Gold Coins were a fun way of gaining rank on the site. Instead of using post counts like most sites do, ranks were earned by contributions to the website - either by writing articles, helping others in the forums and things like that. Admin could give members 'Gold Coins' and they could then choose to either give them to others as a thank you, or keep them for themselves and spend them on gaining ranks.

It was custom built for the site in our old software, but since we've upgraded to the later version of the forum it stopped working. It's on my list of stuff to do, but a bit far down in the priority order.
