Great to C u back in to action - The models look cool and the base of the sniper is indeed very nice.

 Hobbits with crossbows  I thought the Hobbit Lancer might be a dwarf or Nome but he is beardless and has hairy feet. I can not find my I.C.E. Middle Earth Role playing book to check but I believe Hobbit and Dwarf player characters can carry crossbows. It is hard to find Hobbits figures mounted on any thing.
Image
I have considered painting these. They are small for 25mm. They are smaller than some of the other 30 year old 25mm figures. I was disappointed I did not win the E bay bid on the Mithril Hobbit Scout. I may be able to get one of the never produced Heritage Mounted Hobbits. I am sure it will be both crude and small.

I am still looking for this figure, the MHS.

Canon

If any one can point to a reference from Tolkien as a justification for including or excluding crossbows I would like to see it. The justification for plate armor is a stretch but it does exist. :P
The figures are not GW so I can't use them in a tournament so it is more a matter of curiosity.

let's asume they use hunting and farming stuff as weapons. I don't c why they need weapons in their peacefull lands :-) I guess u can hunt with a crossbow.

It requires less skill to make and use a crossbow than a compound bow. However, I don't want to confuse fantasy universes with real universes. I was curious how the crossbow thing became canon.

I can't say, but the crossbow became a very popular roleplaying weapon in all rpg's of the 80"s. I'm assuming that's why it made it into Middle Earth.

The old models I was working on have to be stripped. The name brand varnish frosted them white. At least I did not use it on the big job.
I started this Dwarf Brewery today. I like the old card model so I decided to make one from better materials. I did not have enough of the Hirst Arts blocks ready so I cut out the basic shapes from some scrap pine2'X4's. I glued it together and covered the blocks with dry wall filler.I will engrave the stone into the filler when it is dry. It would be easier to use plastic card. The filler will be easier to paint.

I wonder how a Hobbit Brewery would look :?:

I have decided not to use field stone Hirst arts for this project. I think the Gothic chipped stone will look better. I think I will finish the current model with dowel rod columns on the door and wood shingles.

I started using the pink filler. It speeds thing up. It turns white when it drys.

I cut the dragons from scrap stair tread. The girls are making brush holders.

If I get time I will paint this afternoon.

I had a chance when I got home to stain the the dry wall filler with a wash I make with future floor wax.
The wash seals the plaster and makes it much easier to paint and dry brush.
If I am lucky it will be dry enough to put the roof on before I go to bed.
I will not get much time tomorrow to work on it.

I did not think to photo the wood blocks before I applied the filler. The blocks are much stronger than foam core or card.

This is a card building I converted a while back.
Image The hobbit hole I built a while back has a solid core.

Looks like a nice project Charles, you've made quick progress. The paint came out very well on that too, very authentic. Are you going to carve in the roof tiles as well or use a different method?

Keep up your inspirational work

I will cut them from thin plywood.

I used brown textured paper to make shingles. When it drys, I will add a little more texture and paint the roof in slate colors. I will cut out the roof trim from basswood.Balsa wood is too soft.
I also want to do something more with the doors trim. The door trim needs to be sanded square and glued down as well.

I found a Metal Bugmans shield. I may have some plastic ones around. If not I will make a press mold.
I have failed several attempts at the wood roof trim.I still have more to paint. I think I will start a water mill too.

That looks awesome, Oldman Willow. And I recognize the original cardstock building, too--it came in that old Warhammer campaign boxed set, Grudge of Drong! :)
