so after ayear of playing non-stop 40k for a year the new sourcebooks see me coming back to lotr sbg, and boy its good to be back :-D . so i went through my hobbit masses, thought meh i've used these guys way to much and there are no unamed models anymore, then i looked at my dwarves, badly painted from 2 years ago and then i found my rohan (i have them all in a big gw case) and thought: why not. so i have one box of warriors (old one with 24 models) and a box of riders of rohan, new commanders set and eomer so what do i buy next?

currently my 350 point army is:
warband 1
eomer with bow,shield and horse
6 riders of rohan with 2 throwing spears

warband 2
captain of rohan with shield and heavy armour
12 warriors of rohan with banner and 6 throwing spears

advice would be welcome as i am still un-used to rohan, i was going for 600-800ish points. thanks.

I've always been a fan of Erkenbrand, and with the new rules he is almost essential.

He has an extra point of Might (to help out with Heroic moves) plus he boots courage and allows you to upgrade Riders of Rohan with increased Fight. So I'd suggest getting him and another box of Riders next.

Agreed with Farmer Maggot... though Im sure he meant "boosts courage" rather than "boots courage" :P

Erkenbrand is most useful, but don't overlook the capabilities of Theodred- he does have his merits, for a rather inexpensive hero. Personally, the King's Huntsman looks to be a brilliant model, I wish they had come out with them sooner. If you are going for a balanced calvary-foot force, then I would consider picking up Grimbold as well- the extra strength is something that Rohan lacks in general, and has a difficult time making up for (due to a lack of spears). You would not believe the number of times that a rider of Rohan of mine bowled over an Easterling or Uruk and send a flurry of blows off the thick skull of his enemy- having someone a bit stronger on foot could help with that problem.

Pick up eowyn, all decked out she is still cheap and has valuable might. Three I think, for under 50 points and is F5. I usually give her all the options and stick her with cavalry or give her nothing and use her as a might store for heroic moves.
Also pick up some Rohan royal guard. You will need some f4 on foot.

as said above: take erkenbrand To upgrade your RoR into westfold redshields, grimbold to upgrade your WoR into helminggas and eowyn as a nice scheap hero.
what I also suggest is having some woses, they are cheap spears and their blowpipes are also pretty neat at 3+.

I myself am also collecting a rohan army at the moment, here it is if you're interested:
warband one
-erkenbrand w/ horse
-5 westfold redshields
-7 outriders

warband two:
-grimbold
-12 helminggas w/shield and throwing sprrears

warband three:
-ghan buri gan
-12 woses

500 pts, 8 might, 7 bows +12 blowpipes+ 12throwing weapons

Éowyn is great for calling Heroic Moves, the biggest weakness she has is only 1 Attack. Putting her on horse gives her an extra attack when charging though.

Théodred is pretty good too although I'd rank him below Erkenbrand, Grimbold and Éowyn.

Why do I keep seeing Outriders in lists? From what I've heard (the Kingdoms of Men book is the last one I have to get ) they lost their Fate point, so are now just Riders without the shield for more points...

they aren't heroes any more, their are now just warriors with 3+ shooting and are the same points as a WoR with bow.

Ah, ok. I'd heard they were just lowered by 1 point, still making them a point more expensive than RoR. Personally, I'd use regular Riders because of their higher defence and because I don't have any of the expensive Outriders.

thanks for replies, i do like erkanbrand, and i will get some rohan royal guard :)
but...
the thing i never get with these armies with the red shields upgrade is: do they still have bows? if so what about the 1/3 bow limit rule? is there somthing i am missing as i cannot find any rule where rohan can go above limit or that the bows are discarded by the red shileds, fritskuhntm has put that he has 7 bows, but surely riders have a bow? so i repeat am i missing something? help would be much obliged on this matter and i have taken all these into consideration and will probably get all of them eventually. thanks.

Yes, all the RoR have bows, but there is still the bow limit. So if you have more RoR than 33%, the custom is that only those posed as shooting can shoot. Personally I don't like to waste the points, so I make sure I have enough non-bow foot, RRG, and Sons of Eorl. Speaking of the latter, I really like the Sons...3 attacks on a charge, S4, and very fast...

Outriders on horses are pointless, but Outriders on foot can be useful.

I wouldn't say they are great (at least competitively), but they are certainly fun.

Considering getting some Rohan Outriders, to use as Skirmishing Units. Use them to harrass vulnerable units, such as enemy Scouts or Archers

just put some greenstuf plumes on the helmets of your WoR archers and you've got some outriders :D

My group just assumed that all Rohan Warrior Archers were Outriders. Due to the Warriors being useless
