I bought gulavhar the terror of arnor, I always liked that demon. Since i mostly buy my figs seconded handed, i found brand new a bit pricey. I would have to be luckey, to find this guy on the local 2nd handed sites. I saw that the finecast version was more expensive, it made me decide to get the metal one they still had in one of my local independent stores. But now comes my problem; all metal, so very heavy huge wings.. I already had some troubles gluing the metal bat swarm once..
Everyone talks about pinning, to be honest i never did any pinning b4. Wouldn't know how to do it either and I don't have a drill either. Can i solve it witouth a drill?? Would glue be enough to hold this big boys? Other solutions, to attach those wings?

Possible... Yes, Durable.... No

Pinning really is the best idea with the bigger models even with the finecast version of the model I’d suggest pinning the wings on just for the extra durability. As for how to do it, I swear the one rulebook (or maybe its an older rulebook) has a guide to pinning the metal cave troll, which would certainly give you a guide on how to do it. And yes it does require a drill.

I have that model, and I recommend to use pin, cause the size and weight of the wings.

You just have to drill a hole, put in the pin, put some paint to the pin for marking the other side, drill again, glue it, and it is strong then,

To be honest matey - I'd double pin each wing

I tried Gulavhar without pinning at first, but his wings needed reattatching every other week. So one time,I decided to pin them, they've been fine ever since.

Double-pinned each wing and haven't had a problem since then.

Seriously, I understand trying to save on hobby tools so that you can spend more on "toys," but I've discovered that it's worth it to have the right tools. It makes everything so much easier. Spend the dough, enjoy it mo'. (Snoop Dogg I am not.)

I got that same drill to replace one I have from an XActo set. It's magnificent, especially when you're drilling into pewter or have a lot of drill work to do. It doesn't work with a few of the sizes I need (they're right between its sizing groups) but for the smaller & larger bits it's absolutely perfect!

I asked the same question at the GW in Gent. That guy said to use superglue on both sides and to put green stuff between it. Wonder if that works?

I agree completely. I skimped on the tools to buy more 'toys' when I first started (then again I was only 12ish at the time) but now I'm going back to the older models with the right tools and, whilst I'm no expert, they look a lot better as a result. With the models becoming increasingly expensive you need to make each one as good as it possibly can be.



There's a video I found of someone using a blob of green stuff on the Cave Troll to put it together. Can't comment on how good a solution it is though because I've never tried it.

To the people that are pinning, what do you actually use to act as the pin? Most places I just see it referred to as 'wire' but the only wire I have is far too thin to offer any support. What do you use and where do you get it from? I did have the idea of using Brass Rod but I'm not sure how suitable that would be. I would go to B&Q for a look but its not very convenient to get to where I live.

I have used the super glue + green stuff method, it works ok on some areas but not un something like metal Gulavhar's Wings. Try it on a Troll's head instead, it'd be excellent for that.

This may not be helpful link out side of the US. Tools don't have to be expensive. The $10 rotary tool is good enough for tin and will cut off steel nails as well.
The advantage of name brad tools will be quality accessories.

A flex shaft is a must for wood carving. As good as you are with a pen you should look into investing in one.
