Sigh im so confused, the amount of times gw has changed the lotr game is annoying. wasnt there somthing called battle companies before wotr? then they bring out wotr so you have to get the book for that, and there now calling wotr a bloomin expansion game, and now this with new books to buy, guys just dont do it, its probably the same SBG we allready know, with a few additions that is just a waste, im going to need serious influence and encouragement to play lotr now.

There were 'spell-enslaved' beasts at the battle before the Black Gates (at least in the book). What were those beasts, and what were they doing? I don't have any major artistic or 'historical' problem with the idea that they were carrying orcs on their backs. So long as I've got enough archers to sort them out before they get into contact, I'm fine... :legolas:

Actually the Great Beasts are the creature that pulled Grond at Minas Tirith but thay could be there too. Though to be honest, I think the Great Beasts that pulled Grond were in fact Mumakil since they were large and described as great beasts the paragraph before the Grond paragraph.

I also think that thses releases would look much better in WotR than SBG. The Monsters because they always look bettter next to horsdes of smaller minions, the cheesy king because he looks stupin on his own but as a hero in a formation of goblins he would look better.

An additional note on the Monster, ahs anyone else noted how cheap they all are. The Dwellers in the Dark cost less than Cave Trolls. I think it is s that all 3 can be used in small SBG battles though, the Dwellers will be overpowered, as is the Watcher. The Great Beasts though have a fight value far too low (the sames as an ordinary Orc Warrior) so they won't last in fights that they were unable to kill in trampling.

Battle companies was small scale almost campaign type gaming for players with few models looking to expand (a perfect way to get into a hobby). The WOTR was a different gaming system altogether. The One Ring rule book is still THE RULEBOOK. I think warbands is just a way of playing within the system much like LOME was and still is. I will certainly be using LOME more so than 'Warbands' by the sounds of it (12 warriors to a hero isn't my cup of tea). It may be fun on occasions though. The main thing is these new miniature releases which will hopefully mean more interest in LOTR, and so a return of competitions and events at your local GW :-D

Email to GW staff confirms that they are focussing on SBG now!

WOTR is now an expansion and will be treated as such.

So for a special leader model like Grimbold who has his special Helmingas soldiers, will that now be restricted to 12 in his personal warband and no other hero may have them?

We won't know until we see the new books.

That was Saruman's old rules.

It's interesting how they have gone back to the old way of displaying scenarios like a map rather than a picture of the board.

does anyone know how to make these kind of maps? i'm looking for the images of bushes, walls, trees etc which can then be cropped and added to a map, anyone?

Wow, I've been checking back on the site periodically over the past few months, but not until I saw the "New LoTR Releases" email from GW today did I feel the need to actually sign in and post!

Is anyone else concerned about the several NEW monsters added to the Evil side, with seemingly nothing on the Good side to balance it out? I mean, the Demon of the Deep looks WHFB-ish and with the Balrog and Gulavhar already in production it's really unneeded. The Goblins on the Warg look amusing, and maybe we'll see something like it in the Hobbit film. In any event, most of this stuff will likely be too pricey for me to strongly consider. As a new(ish) Moria player without an unnamed Shaman, though, the new one will likely be a must-have along with the Goblin King.

I think the Dweller in the Dark, or whatever it's called, is in line with ME. Morgoth had a lot of servants, many of whom were Maia. The vast majority of his Maiar servants were Maia of Fire. The Balrogs were just the greatest of the Fire Maiar, and if one of them can escape without notice, then a lesser Maia ought to be able too.

I don't mean to offend, but I DO disagree with you in part. Although I agree that it's not out of the question, I simply believe it's unneccesary for the miniature range and game. Much like the Isengard Troll from a few years ago. If the game had a First Age supplement or even a scenario, I'd welcome this guy with open arms. For Third Age games though, I think the Balrog and Gulavhar cover any bases this guy could hope to. It also doesn't help that it reminds me of GW's Bloodthirster of Khorne from the early 90's. ALOT.

Well, I think it fits well enough for me to buy one. It does help that it seems like it'll really chew through a dwarven army, but that's only in game.

There was actually a post on Beasts of War in the comments section by a 40K player considering purchasing the model to use as a demon. While I personally think it fits in Middle-earth, it is plausible that the model was released with intentions to catch the eye of WHFB and 40K players as well.

You know, I just took a closer look at the model on the GW site. There's a picture of it seemingly without the horns on top of its' head. I like it a lot better that way, so it may make it into my collection as a second Balrog.
