Remember also the Crebain and the warg attack, that finally convinced them to try Moria. Eregion was no longer good and safe, and the closer they'd get to Saruman's domain, the more dangerous it'd get. They also hoped Moria was still empty and they'd get through undetected.

About the eagles, flying would have exposed them to every evil being in the lands. If the flying Nazgûl wouldn't challenge them, the will of Sauron would. It nearly broke Frodo on Amon Hen, even when the contact was brief and Sauron wasn't quite aware of him. He'd have no chance against the full focus of the Eye.

Also, the more powerful you are, the more the Ring tempts and corrupts you. The Eagles were quite powerful. How easy would it be to drop a ring-bearing hobbit mid-flight and collect the prize from his smashed corpse? The Eagles, being wise, wouldn't probably dare to even try to expose themselves to the temptation. They also didn't care meddling as much in the middle-earthy matters as Gandalf did.

^This is probably threadomancy, but I would like to make the point about individuals' power and the ring, that it doesn't always work like that. Tom Bombadil was one person who had loads of power (he controlled all plants and animals within a large radius) but wasnt affected by the ring, nor could he control it; in fact there was a quote by someone at the council of elrond that said about Tom, if given the ring to keep safe would eventually forget about it and lose it.

so basically I still think flying on eagles was a viable option :-D

Had I been Gandalf, I would have suggested sailing down the River Bruinen from Rivendell and then along the coast to Gondor via Dol Amroth. It would have been quicker and safer than any journey on foot - avoiding the perils of Isengard, Moria, and Mordor competely. The only potential problems would have been corsairs from Umbar and the weather.

That would perhps be a better idea, of course they could not avoid Mordor whichever route they took. However doing so, would bring the Ring too close to Denethor, which is not a good idea, and obviously there is the waether and the dreaded corsairs.

The river Bruinen, good idea. Except, it would make a very short book{s}.....perhaps making it a 'Biology' instead of a 'Trilogy'.

Except when Legolas would hear the seagulls, he'd forget all about the mission and row right across the ocean to Aman.

Just reawd something that might be of interest to this thread.

Druwaith Iaur, is the land that seperates Rohan and Gondor on that side, is also the lands of Woses, the pukelmen pygmy dudes. They must be cousins to the ones in Druadan forest, the ones who helped the Rohanese find a shortcut to Minas Tirith.

But who is to say these ones are friendly? Maybe they are cannibals!

I can see Merry tripping Samwise as cannibal pygmys are chasing the fellowship. "Sorry Sam, but your sacrifice has saved us!" :merry: :sam:

Hey! Why Sam, after Gandalf he's the best in the Fellowship, get rid of Frodo, Merry or Pippin (if Frodo, give the ring to Sam)

I would say Merry an Pippin but I don't like them until the third one, Legolas and Gimli all the way (even though Legolas is an elf  )

I believe the northern route was favoured to avoid Gondor as that would have been under the closest scrutiny by Sauron and his minions. Saruman's treachery complicated matters.
