Looks promising, Oldman Willow! 8) The trolls seem to have already the same colour & texture of those rocks.

Now, imagine a hobbit wandering through the Old Forest, stumbling upon this odd, mossy, isolated outcrop of rock and having all the paint drained from his face… "Blimey! If that isn't Tom, Dick & Harry!" :o

Image I painted the plastic kit today. I am not sure how I am going to base it.

Image I made a impression of the troll in Plasticine to experiment with a troll embedded in a rock face. I broke the first one. I will let the plaster set longer.
Image
Moderate success. I wish I had a unbuilt plastic troll :x I might saw one in half

I’m sure you’re gonna find a fitting replacement: “Blimey! If that isn’t Tom, Dick & Uncle Donald!”

Clicked on one of the thumbnails and viewed slideshow and just have to say your terrain is absolutely fantastic - you can't even tell your lookin at a model - really realistic!
I just paint miniatures but am being inspired into making some terrain myself. Will follow this post closely!

Twisted trees and the Old Forest

Image
Twisted trees for the base. I will work on the paint the new cast needs a brown wash and some blending. The base will be MDF. I have not decided how big, I may use some larger trees.
The tree thumbnail is a separate album.

Absolutely fantastic - amazing attention to detail - especially like the hollow where the hobbits hide from the black riders!!!

This photo is not much different than the other but I decided not to put the trolls on a permanent base.
I think I am going to add very closely cut small bases to the three vine trees. They will be a little less fragile.I am going to pick and cut some vines for some spider nest too. I think I can make some that will survive storage.
The flash washed out the color but I need to mix up some brown wash.

Image
I think they will work better as separate parts for Mirkwood or the paths of the dead.
Suggestions are welcome.

looks great. I also always doubt to make things permanent... There are more options if u could add or remove stuff. But on the other hand - if u do make it permanent u can add lots and lots of more details..
Painting the easterling riders for my horsies - might do that portal thingie inbetween.

This project is coming along very well, you've certainly been busy Charles. This is going to be such an awesome piece, how big is it all together now once you put the piece together? By the way, I've always been curious whats the story behind your avatar? It's been getting at me for a while.

Can't wait for more

Linda gave me a Hildebrandt Tolkien calender some time when we were in college in the late 70's. I always liked the painting of The Great Willow. I found the figure some time after that and liked it. The Scouring 0f the Shire is one of my favorite supplements.A few years ago I set out to make sure I could play all of the scenarios in the book. After I had collected and painted the figures necessary and built the terrain. I decided that Odovacars Bolger's Promenade needed special attention. After all the hobbits deserved to be chased around the old forest by appropriate trees. I set about converting the 27 black hearten trees for the scenario. To make a long story short I have more than 200 tree men now. When I joined the One-Ring I thought a tree avatar would be fun. Oldman Willow was available. I had a good model. The model was very old and small. I added the bark and some woodland scenic armatures to it.

The Old Forest fits on two shelves in my Game room. It never has to be set up the same way but there is enough for a 4X8

yeh when I saw your avatar I was at first like, "whoa, that's a pretty cool tree.. nice foliage..hey wait! is that a face???" now its even cooler than I thought!

Anyway its a bit of an expensive suggestion, but I would love to see the three hill trolls still 'alive' and looking less stone-like, with their campsite and stuff. If I had the money and time I would use plastic/metal/resin kits (probs not GW ones) and convert them into interesting poses, like have one midway thru a big tankard of beer! :-D

Hi - I would just like to ask your advice on something if you don't mind. I am wanting to add some water to one of my miniature bases its a 25mm base with a large rock on one edge - the rest of the base I would like to be water. I have glued the rock in place and used putty to create a water effect ( to the best of my ability lol) what do you think the best way of going about painting it is? I'm looking for a browny green effect. Is it possible to mix brown and green paint with gloss varnish and kind of layer it on in stages? I'm using GW paints.

Any help much appreciated
Regards
Kev
