Everyone has done a brilliant job so far. It is going to be impossible to work out who to vote for. I hope to get mine finished this weekend.

Right now I'm having a hard time trying to sort out the color of Lurtz's leather and armour. The movie and stills ain't helping me much. The colors are too dark and hard to make out, it's too mute, monotone, monochrome... whatever the word for it is, help me out. He looks like he's all dressed in black even though he's not.

I went for a dark brown with mine as you can see from my pictures. I looked at the stills of Lurtz from the movies and decided not to follow them too much because the colours he has in the film wouldn't look very good on a mini in my opinion. The dark brown came out looking okay, but I reckon a slightly lighter brown like the one Elland has used would look better. It's completely up to you though and how you want him to look, do you want him to still look quite dark or do you want him to look lighter? The great thing about miniature painting is you don't need to follow the movies and there is no right or wrong way to go about it. Just go with what feels right to you.

Here is my entry:

Image

I had the same problem with Lurtz going to look all monochrome and almost black. I went for a little more red skin than I first intended and instead of neutral browns on the clothing I started from Dark Flesh or Scorched brown, which have a little bit of red and yellow in them, respectively. The armour is still quite dark but I decided to keep it that way eventually. I'm still not happy with the arrow feathers, they are supposed to be warg fur (!) but they just don't stand out enough, but otherwise I'm really happy how this turned out eventually. This Lurtz will be part of my Amon Hen diorama, there's still Legolas, Gimli, dying Boromir and a couple of Uruks to do.

That is very nicely done Valpas! And thanks for the words of encouragement Red Corsairs. Usually I follow the movies and stills, but Lurtz is giving me problems trying to figure out what's what in terms of color, a bit mind boggling. I'll just copy Valpas ;P

Really nicely painted Pasi, it looks great. My only criticism is the little imperfection sticking out of the rim of the base. It's only a tiny minor criticism, it's just when the rest of the model looks so good, that really sticks out.

I like the cloth and leather, that's how I wanted mine to look pretty much, I just couldn't manage it.

Speaking of mind boggling, if another great entry comes in, I swear my head is going to explode come voting time. I'm already now torn between three entries.

Yeah, I didn't notice it until I was going through the photos and now I'm too busy to redo it (will be away from home starting tomorrow morning until end of month). Since this mini is going to a diorama without the base I just took the first base I happened to find from my bits box without looking at or filing it properly and sanded it. Well, I hope I learned something from this... :)

Just threw him together this past week. :)
I had fun taking part in this challenge and expect to see me in each one that I happen to be home for! 8)

Thought I'd add the hand was my first attempt at freehand... wish I'd made the small finger a bit, well, smaller.

I've always thought bases and faces make a model, and your mini proves this 8)

Jake, you've made my day. That's quite a compliment, thank you very much. :)
Hopefully I can attain the precision and detail you portray on your models someday.
