A good start, Bart. 8)

I do not know what the plan is, but are you going to model the upper edges of the cardboard at the sides & the back in an uneven, rock-ridge? Might be more interesting to look at than a perfect horizontal rim.

fill up the box with PU-foamspray.

Good stuff. Don't forget your gloves  I am looking forward to your progress!

Yep, that was the plan, keeping the path rather clear (just some gravel or so) and some sort of rocky cranellations... :)

I only wonder what the result will be after the PU-foam. I never used it before in terrain-building (only for insulating a house)...
I fear a bit that in my enthusiasm I will spray so much of the foam that it will tear the box out of shape once hardened... but we'll see about that. I can always restart if I need to, heh.

About storing the piece... I guess it will end up in the garage with all the rest, gathering dust over the years...

Your fears are justified. There’s no way you can control the foam; it is indeed very likely your precious stairways are going to get wholy absorbed, or become dislocated or suffering an even worse fate (I for my part won’t give a penny for their survival… )

You have a few options though:

1) Strengthen your box with a wooden frame on the outside, to prevent the foam from deforming the cardboard. You can remove the wood when the foam has cured;

2) Spray a layer of foam upon a newspaper and cut out separate rock faces & glue them onto the cardboard afterwards.

3) Use bark or fragments of foam board instead.

Whatever you do, when spraying, produce only small amounts of foam: think of blobs of cream upon a cake. Like zits, they will expand beyond hope. Burning a candle in the church of Saint-Laurent might help as well.

Can’t wait to see the result. :)

lol! Well, that sounds very promising ;)
Thanks though for the advice!

I could also use non-expanding foam on a spray-pistol, which is excellent stuff aswell, but I don't have that now and I do have the usual expanding one (for free)...
So, maybe tonight I'll give it a try... well... In fact I now have 5 mins to try out.. hehehe... can't wait ;)

There are two types one expands a lot the other not quite as much. The foam has been known to push door and window frames out of square.
I don't use it much, but not for why you think. Paint does not always stick to it well. So it wears badly. I hope you did not get any on your skin.
Take a photo as example. Tomorrow you may be able to do something when it is dry. Don't give up :!:

Heheh, well, I still have some hope...

the can I had was something really weird... I've never seen it before actually.
I needed to activate it by pushing an activating-pin through the bottom and then shake very well...
It said that the color had to be homogene.... and it was... untill I found out at the end it wasn't meant to be homogene yellow, but most probably homogene-green.
So, the two components in the can were yellow and blue... Nice to know this now. lol
I'll never take that kinda foam again (if it still exists anyway).
I thought it wouldn't get hard enough since the components weren't mixed well, but seems I was wrong

Meanwhile I went food-shopping and now the foam is hardenend well enough that I can even cut it already. :-)
Although, I need more foam to continue (surprized of how low in content these cans are).

So, in the end, it's doesn't look that bad... Funny though with the colours, but not too bad... right? :o

That could have been way worse!I put some in a latex mold one time. That was a real disaster. :o I am looking forward to your progress.

Heheh, well at least I'm a little experience smarter now...
I'll probably continue with just blocks of rubbish foam etc, since I still have plenty of that stuff around...
But I'll see about that a little later. In the end I will cover it all in plaster anyway...

I can't cut it yet though, I tried but it's still not hard in the center of the big bulbs...

My last expanding foam project. I switched to bark during this project. You can look through the album and see how the project evolved.
Sometimes rail road model methods work. The foam shell is too fragile for this size terrain model. You have fail to learn what works.

Well, did some work on the Willow Tree Giant.

After long thinking and considering, I did go along with the branches that came with the figure, and I absolutely don't regret!
I was wrong to fear this, I was wrong to doubt about it!
I love the result!
I first covered the hanging branches with goblin green and then highlighted with lime green (vallejo) which is such a valuable green I think!

I first tried to cover them with pva and flock or something, but in the end I kept them like they were after the paint. The flock made it too thick imo, and considering he lives in Fangorn-darkness .. :o (I mean... cheery, lovely, friendly... forrest...) he doesn't need too much fluff...

I also tried to stick them on the tree with superglue :? but in the end greenstuff-dots did the job.
All I now have to do it overpaint the greenstuff dots and Willow's done! :D

For now, your paint work looks (a lot) better than your foam blobs!

But you seem to have managed to keep the damage at a minimum. :yay: I’m looking forward to see your next Moria-box step.
