 Post subject: Quick Spear Question.

Hey guys, just recently started playing SBG with my wife and mates. I've probably just skipped over this in the one rule book; if a player with priority moves a spear armed model to support a friendly in combat, can the opponent then charge the spear armed model and take him out of the fight and remove the +1 attack bonus? :?:

Of course :) in the same way the opponent can charge anyone he can reach whether they're already in a fight or not.

Important semantics: the spear support is not "in the fight". That's why he can be shot at. It's an important distinction.

Exactly. The supporting spearman can be charged, pulling him away from the assist and basically creating an additional and separate combat.

In addition to charging the spear support, if your enemy has 2-3 models ganging up on you in direct base contact for a fight, you can charge some of those to pull them off and even the odds.

In SBG the number of dice you can cast to win the Fight roll is often (not always) the most critical dice in the game as so much hinges on it. This is why Spears (and pikes) are so useful. So anything you can do to rob that from your enemy is important. Likewise, anything you can do to have more dice on your side than your opponent will help you out.

Remember that shooting at someone supporting a Fight is not "in the fight" but you will still need to roll "in the way" or risk hitting the fight itself instead. Only a matter if you're Evil.

No, he's not in the fight. If you have direct line of sight to the supporting model you can shoot without an "in the way". If your shot is obscured by the enemy model in the fight, then yes, an "in the way" is required, but my understanding has been you only risk shooting the enemy model, so you can do this even on the Good side. You only can't do it if you're Good and your shot is obscured by your own models.

Sorry. You're correct and I was not clear. Good can fire at supporting models as long as they have a clean line of sight. I guess it was more of the concept that clear line of sight isn't always easy to get in such cases, limiting Good's shooting options. But if you can flank the fight then you're all set even as Good.

Actually, I believe good cannot take a shot if there is a fight in the way. The rulebook says (pg 25 in Mines of Moria)

Targets in combat are randomized between the two sides. So good can't risk shooting past a combat. Their morals get annoying at times :no: :-D
