I am new to war of the ring and I currently have around 800 pts and I need a 600 point army I was thinking

Riders of Rohan
3 companies 90 pts
Riders of Rohan
3 companies 90 pts
Riders of Rohan
3 companies 90 pts
Sons of Eorl
4 companies 180 pts
oathsworn militia
4 companies 80 pts
oathsworn bowman
2 companies 40 pts

I also have Eowyn and Theoden but they take up so many points. Are they or one of them worth throwing in? I have 30 points to spare and i could always remove a unit to make room. What do ya'll think. How can I improve my 600 pt army. Any suggestions are welcome.

And are those point values correct. Is it 45 points for 2 sons of Eorl or 1?

Hmm.. well 600 points is very small for War of the Ring but you've got the good start of an army. You definitely need to add a hero though (both because the rules require it and also because it will make your army much stronger). In general cavalry armies need to be hero-heavy so that the heroes can call Heroic Charges...otherwise your expensive cav is just going to get charged by infantry and mobbed every turn.

I would prefer Theoden over Eowyn because he can give his entire formation Fight 7 (with his special rule and free Epic Charge every turn). You might also want to look at Deorwine and Erkenbrand--both are fairly cheap Epic Heroes with good special rules.

Your 3-company formations of Riders of Rohan should be very effective skirmishers...shooting and threatening the enemy's flanks. If you could I would pick up a few Royal Guard on horse as well (you could just get one company then proxy the rest of the formation with Riders), as they are much better heavy-hitters than the Riders for their points and they have lances.

Theoden is a great Epic Hero for Rohan so you should try to get him in there somehow. Oathsworn Bowmen are not, in my opinion, worth taking as they get ripped to ribbons unless they are in a defensive structure. Its been a long while since I've designed a list this small so I'm not 100% sure what else should be changed. For 420pts you could build the Riders of the Westfold Battlehost (75pts) with Erkenbrand(75pts) and your current Riders of Rohan formations(270pts for all three). From there you can add more companies, heroes or epic heroes with the last 180 points to boost their effectiveness. Riders of the Westfold means you'll usually strike first and occasionally simultaneously but never second(unless a duel occurs).

Thank you for the responses. How are the outriders in combat?

Outriders are designed as bow-shooting harassment units. I would try to use them as such. Only charge them in if the benefit is worth it (getting a rear charge to support other units, pinning a critical foe, adding forces to ensure winning an Heroic Fight, things like that).

I have decided to go with
Theoden 125
5 company of royal knights 175
4 company eored 120
4 company eored 120
3 company of oathsworn militia 60 pts

Let me know if ya'll have any strategy tips with this army
Does theoden get a 4+ earth shaking charge if he uses heroic charge?

Hodl the riders as the main attack force. But its a good strategy to use the warriors as main force and bring the riders from behind. The archers just far and shoot.

Looks like a good start. After a few games you may find things to tweak. I like Theoden as a WotR leader for sure. If you can get a flank or rear charge with those Royal Knights, and have him call an Epic Charge (free!) to get the Fight bonus you can do some serious damage. Lances to boost the wound roll plus Theoden sharing his Fight value with the whole Formation.

Your 2 Eored Formations will be your softest point and if you aren't careful someone will At the Double or Wings of Terror up to you and take them out easily if they get the charge off. You don't have any Heroes in there to help with that (call an Heroic Move or Heroic Charge or even At The Double yourself). So play them with caution. This is where you may want to adjust later.

Let us know how it goes!
