I've taken another look at the Angmar list and tried to re-write the list accordingly. Still don't want Gulavhar, he's just too "GW" for me.

The Dwimmerlaik - 125pts
The Tainted - 125pts
Buhrdur - 125pts

Spirits of the Ungrateful Dead - 240pts
4 Companies Ghostly Legion

The Long-Dead Host - 240pts
3 Companies of Spectral Host

Greater Orcs of Gundabad - 140pts
7 Companies of Orcs; Shields

Hillmen of Rhudaur - 180pts
6 Companies of Carn Dum Warband

Court of Fallen Kings - 120pts

Man-Wolves - 120pts

Shade - 100pts

Allies

The Shadow Lord - 125pts

Wolves of Eriador - 100pts
5 Companies of Wargs

Lesser Orcs of Gundabad - 140pts
7 Companies of Goblins; Shields

Lesser Orcs of Gundabad - 120pts
6 Companies of Goblins; Shields

2000 Points Exactly

I would look to some harder hitting formations in the angmar list. Perhaps swap a shade and a comp of goblins for Burdur as you lack some hard-hitting formations. You might even want to squeeze in Gulavar at this points' level as well. Small changes, if you want to be competitive, swap the warg chieftan for Thrydan (they probably won't be happy to see his little cape but that's their problem). If you have any of the models, some werewolves I think could be very fun to use as well.

There are a few suitable models in the various ranges out there.

I do not like their abilities, for their cost, though. I would always include those two hero-monsters though, especcially for 2000pts. If you are going down the route of spirit troops as a base, then you defintily want the 'Spirit Legions of Angmar' battlehost. Overall, any mandatory troops for the Spirit legion aside, I think spirit cav is far superior to Spirit infantry and I feel spirit infantry that cannot be joined by Epics are particularly hampered.

So the ugly Troll and the Balrog-wannabe are practically musts for Angmar? Damn shame.

Nothing is a must. I would always take them though.

My take on the Angmar list is that some things are pretty good; some things are ok in some versions, or with the battlehost to go with them; then there is the rest, which are overpriced, and have problems with them. It is a reality of this game that you can't trust GW's points to reflect how useful things will be in-game.

Ain't that the truth.

I have never actually seen an Angmar army being played, so my opinion is shakey at best, but I don't think I would include either of the monsters. The spirits are expensive enough as it is, I think I would rather save the points to get more bodies.

That is a purely subjective, knee-jerk reaction based on very little evidence though.

Forgottenlore, IMO that would be false economy. He is going to have to strike a balance between bodies and more expensive things, but I'd economise on spirit troops before I economised on those Monsters. They simply provide so much utility in terms of messing with your opponents - due to their mobility, dueling ability, and capacity to work flanks. Further, that free heroic fight of the wannabe balrog is going to be golden in terms of getting the most out of the spirit troops.

I can only presume that the 'lesser orcs of Gundabad' could instead be allied blackshields, and so cancel out the overcosting of the spirit troops a little?

Looks good. If you want to ally in a competitive wraith, I wouldn't take the SL. Also, I might swap some orc companies out to make 2x4 companies of wargs. I might also try and get some more barbarians as you lack hard hitting formations except for the werewolves but they'll probably only last a turn, two if you're lucky.

That would be Khamul, I take it? I was considering him (and I have the model) but he seems one of the least themed Nazgul to have in an Angmar army.

I do like the thought of more Barbarians though. Considering the fact that I was dreading the thought of finding 25mm-based Werewolves, I think I'll drop the Orcs and Werewolves for more.

Khamul is the most competitive wraith and it would probably be best to take him but I wouldn't suggest him as I despise his "imbalanced-hood". I would probably go for the Undying who is nicely balanced imo (as far as wraiths go anyway).

43 Companies, 6 Might. 1990 Points Total

Now I'm worried about too little Might. Should I drop a Formation of Goblins and add some Captains and the like?

You could get witch king with cavalry (allies) to get behind the enemy to use his power...

I was actually considering swapping a unit of Goblins for Durburz and 3 Companies of Goblin archers. This would help alleviate two of my concerns; Might and ranged ability.

No they aren't, but it's themed and I have the models already. I don't really want to go the route of "hey look! sixteen crossbowmen from Isengard/ Umbar just happened to stroll past and decided to join the fray!"

FWIW, I really like 20pt bow. I think they are good troops for their cost and fit easily neatly into the Angmar list. That stated, since I have no Goblins, I converted up some Siegebows with Carn Dum crew...

Yeah, I've always had a "you get what you pay for" outlook on most things (though I wish the game designers did too...) so for a 60pt formation, I'm not expecting devastation. I'd just rather have Goblin archers than, say, Haradrim ones or crossbowmen.
