This is excellent.

One question regarding painting this model, is there are particular reason why you'd chose to paint most of it before continuing to add parts along the way?
I've seen a lot of large projects which have been done this way, and I wonder if it's just to get a decent idea of the final look of it or if there's a different reason?

I imagine that it would help to keep you motivated, but it might also risk covering a nice paint job.

agree he might take a risk there :) the brick work is painted really great, it would be terrible to mess that up

I agree the brickwork looks fantastic. I don't think it will be too hard to match the colours?

Well I painted it a while back now. I decided to paint it because the most of it had been done, all that was left was those three top pieces I'm working on now. I don't actually know what their proper name is. Painting bigger models before their done always helps, even a base coat. Although I did go a step further, and it helps to give you an idea on what it will look like. It also covers up all those messy pieces of glue etc... and of course it helps to motivate you to finish it!

Yep shouldn't be too difficult, as long as I use the same paint pots.

Thank's for all the comments folks, I have another update for today once I get my camera working again. Somehow changed a setting and it doesn't like me anymore, ehe.

I've been pretty busy and I got a good bit done so far. I've added balsa strips right along the inner wall and outer waller, along the towers etc... The top fortifications (where Theoden stands) have been made and painted. The model is pretty accurate and all that is missing is the steps around the back of the mountain and the caves (which I may actually do)

Hey folks, as I said earlier I may put in the caves at the back. I have decided to do so, but I'm stuck. The cave looks to big I find and too regular. If you see the rectangle like shape? What should I do? Lots of help would be fantastic

Cheers peeps

I think you could drape some plaster bandage or plaster soaked paper towels around the upright walls to make flow stone and a few stalactites would do the trick.
http://ludstuff.blogspot.com/2011/02/ta ... e-pt5.html
or you could replace the card walls with stalagmite columns like in the example above.
Good job so far :yay:

I thought about a bit.The above link is for young children's school project but it is the best how to use plaster bandage video I have seen.

wow great job on this man. For the caves you might could use spray foam on a small spray applicator, going bit by bit, starting at the back and working forward, and not putting on too much at one time. That way you could layer the pieces and carve them as you go to get that alien underworld of stone we all know and love. A hot foam knife would go a long way ive even seen a few guys use a solder gun in a pinch on a low setting, gives you some serious detail/melting power.

Cheers folks, should have some to work on it this weekend. The expanding foam is a good idea, I'll have to fetch a can sometime.

Really good so far; definitely looking forward to the next lot of progress.

How high does the Deeping Wall stand?

5 1/4 inch

There are several sets of plans these are among the best.
http://www.freewebs.com/playtable/
http://onyxworkshop.wordpress.com/about/helms-deep/

I made my first Deeping wall the same height as the GW production model at 5 1/4 but, I made the rampart only 2 inches wide. It needs to be 3 inches wide.
I am not sure what measurements Drum is using .

Thanks for the comments folks! Yeah I found that webs one a few months back, but never had it when building the bulk of the model. I'll be able to work on Helm's Deep quite a bit this week, so should hopefully get a chunk done. I'll finish off where there are places needing dry brushes, add some more dull green to show damp etc... Crates, spear racks, boxes and all will be made so that it looks like it has been lived in.

For the Deeping Wall I based it on the White Dwarf magazine of the Easterling Castle which was WD314 February edition. Tweaks were made to it so that it's higher and more space for the troops to move on top. The Wall measures 15cm high, which is the maximum for the ladders to be placed and still look like they are the right size and 6cm for the platform, this allows almost 3 troops behind each other on. Which is rather handy meaning you can have your two lines of men up front and space for hero's or whatever to move around.

On that note, OldWillow are you going to have a slight curve in the Deeping Wall? To be accurate there is a slight curve as you can see in the films, but I didn't really think it was very important so I left it out. May be harder to do with bricks though.

I may make the wall curved a bit. The wall builder cast is thin enough to manage it, I think. As I cast enough parts I can cut a core from foam.

Hey folks, I thought I should show you a few pictures of my recent big project. I've been rather busy with exams (and still am) but have found the time to still enjoy myself. This cathedral model is going to be sold as soon as it's done, for I (already) have another project in mind. I'll sell it off on ebay so if anyone wants a heads up when I'm selling it just ask. Quite far in this project and it hasn't taken long so far. Recently I have been busy making 40k buildings to sell for a bit of cash, and that has worked out quite nicely.

Each window has been hand carved out of foamcore, and I'm working on the front and back of the cathedral at the mo. I'll fill in the other side of windows soon. Got the steps done today and most of the stained windows. One side of the cathedral will be a ruin so that it's easily accessible. C&C's Welcome!

Here was the outline with towers and a few foam pieces to show the sides.
Image

Sides were then cut out and then further the windows.
Image

Basic window template was drawn out.
Image

Side piece was cut out, still having some trouble with sizes here thought - might need to restart.
Image

Stained windows were then added in with thinner foamcore. This is the time consuming part :o
Image

Side piece was cut out and the second stage of windows was added with arches underneeth
Image

Just completed both pieces here with all the windows
Image

Steps were carved out with the router
Image

Where I am at the moment, used the router to get some depth at the door too.
