Once formations are engaged in a fight, are they allowed to disengage? I think that they should be aloud to do so, for more hit and run tactics using cavalry.

After combat, you split them apart so that they aren't in base to base contact any more. Then you can do as you please the next turn...

Remember they'll only be able to move half the next turn though, as they'll be within 6in of an enemy formation.
