Just wanted to say hi. Im from Newton Abbot in sunny Devon, England and am gradually getting back into the hobby after 25 years. I collected chaos figures back in the early 80s when they were just lumps of lead so its amazing to see the quality of the figures now. My desire is back to collect a Hobbit army and have painted up 20 or so but guess im in the minority as cant see many people choosing the little toughies to fight for them. Anyway, it looks a great site and i will continue to read and learn from everyones exerience. Any advice on building a hobbit army would be appreciated. :pippin:

Welcome to the site and back to the hobby. Hobbits are awesome, they are just pricey little buggers and I think that stops alot of people from playing them.

Hi Tooky.

Yep, it is amazing the amount of details they can put in the miniatures these days, even in such tiny creatures such as hobbits. Great minis to paint, I for one love'em (specially Rosie Cotton ) !

Welcome to OR!

Hi Tooky, welcome to the One Ring. And welcome back to the hobby too!

I have a nice collection of hobbits and am always amazed at how well they cope in combat - their shooting ability is legendary and, so long as you have some stout fighters to back them up (Grey Company or Dwarves), they're a force to be reckoned with. So, you've made a good choice to start with!

Welcome.

back in the early 80s

I started collecting way back then but never stopped. To make a Hobbit army I looked at the Scouring of the Shire supplement. The largest force in the scenario book was 12 Militia, 8 Archers and 4 Shirriffs. I started with that and added characters then foes until I could run both sides of all the scenarios. That is usually the way I play. I have never tried to run Hobbits as a competitive force. However, some combination of Rangers and hobbit archers might be nasty.

Thank you all for your welcome. Looks like ive missed out on a hell of a lot while ive been away. Its nice to have some time on my hands as im a postman and have afternoons off to do some painting! Getting married and bringing up two girls has kept me away from the hobby but hopefully now i can get stuck in and complete my hobbit army as the local gamesworkshop manager has invited me to battle away in october. Its a 800 point army day so im still getting feedback from people on this site as to how the shape of my army should look. I really wanted to stick to just hobbits, unleash 150 archers then charge away with the militia but maybe im being naive!

I have a few hobbits now but struggle frustratingly with their 4 inch move as I usually play with cavalry.

Bullroarer Took has a horse but thats it. What I meant is that I usually play with other forces that have a lot of cavalry. So when I do get the hobbits out I find the game very slow to develop as it takes more turns to get them where I want them.

Reading some of the feedback it looks like i wont have the most potent force i could have chosen but hey, i will give it a go. The best way to learn i suppose is to get the little fellas into combat and note down where my weak points are. I will try and work out how to take photos of what ive painted and get them up here but at the moment i havent got a clue how to do this! No Queen Beruthiel i dont play anything at the moment so im gonna start from scratch again as i presume the rules have slightly changed from 25 years ago!

Frodo and the rest of the Fellowship may have ponies too, but they aren't exactly cavalry :)

ahh that explains it, an you should get the One rulebook to rule them all (sbg rulebook) and lome (legions of middle earth). In the one rulebook to rule them all there are all the rules, some scenarios and a hobby section while in lome there are lists of which armies that exist and who can ally with who, 12 scenarios and some more stuff.

Ok will look to get the rulebooks soon Queen B. Thinking of having Gandalf with the four main hobbits on horseback, bullroarer took and farmer maggott with his dogs added to the bulk of my other hobbits. I feel unstoppable and i havent even fought a battle yet!

That sounds nice, good luck

btw if you play Lome you can´t have the bullroarer with any other hobbit hero if i remember right.
