Die of fear!?

Are you sure you are using the correct courage rules? Models only flee the board when they fail their courage test when half the force is destroyed. If it fails trying to charge then Balrog then it just stays where it is.

The best thing i could say is use the whole bow limit, and get either warriors with high defence and courage (elves and dwarves), or just pile him, i mean, for 500 points you could get easily 35 orcs and several trolls, all you need to wait for is him to roll low, then the troll's high strength and weight of numbers should do some damage.

A balrog really doesn`t have a weakness feed it an orc warrior each turn (if you play a game where the point not is to kill all the enemy). if you play a battle where your objective just is to kill all the enemy than do what Higlordell told you

I fought one with wood elves and Galadhrim warriors with Legolas. We called the game about halfway through, but at that point I'd done 5 wounds on the Balrog and he'd only killed one wood elf.

Hmm... yes a Balrog is hard.

I would use some Heroes with alot of might ( i.e Boromir or Aragorn), hope that he rolls low, and then use as many might points as you need to roll higer.
I would say the Balrog`s only disadvantage is that he has no might and no Fate, so if he rolls low he is rolling low and cant change that.

Another option is also to have a bunch of warriors to block him (try to feed them to him one after another...), and mabey have a Treebeard behind, who can throw stones. Those stones, i think, is close to the only thing that positivley does damage to him alot of times

Hope this helps...

Mmm, You could use Aragon with Anduril, but then again if he lost he fight then hed get pretty much killed ....

There only one tacti for this, shoot n´ swarm. Thats how I killed a Dragon with tough hide and breath fire...

I use my dragon with Fly and Breathe Fire. One shot from his Breathe Fire and the Balrog can be killed on turn 1 or 2. It seems only fair to use a monster to kill another monster, fight fire with fire is my motto.

This trick also works on dragons without Breathe Fire which have Tough Skin or Wyrmtounge instead.

If you use a good force then Aragorn with Anduril and Glorfindel (or another high attack hero), more than 1 eagle or a few ents can kill a balrog. Ents are better in threes so that their total wounds is almost that of the Balrog and their strength means they can wound the beast quite readily. Eagles have the advantage of mobility and three of them can trap the Balrog without too much difficulty. Glorfindel is less susceptible to the Balrogs magic. Aragorn is good but can fall to the Balrog if he doesn't win his fights against it and even with Anduril it would still take him at least 4 turns to kill the Balrog which is why he needs the support of another hero or 2.

Hope this helps.

But Balrogs don't have magic...

Anyway, I support using a Dragon with Breath Fire to kill it.

Taking a dragon won't help a Good player. The best thing to do is only take it on if you have to due to the scenario, otherwise just keep it busy.

Artllery is a good bet especially the dwarven kind, a pair of them lead by captain will make the Balrog user very wary of how he moves, could be possible to nullify him with just the threat. Surround him with 2-handed Khazad Guard might knock a few wounds of him.

The balrog does have a big weakness against large numbers of troops. The trick is to remove his supporting warriors (usually very simple as the Balrog will probably be taking up over half your enemy's points), then throw as many troops at him as you can.

You need a good combination of 2-hand weapons and people supported with spears. You really want to make sure you get a 6 the turn he only gets a 5, so you should try to have over 10 attacks without a penalty in the fight. The two hand weapons can make very light work of him when he inevitably loses a fight. The best part of this strategy is that the balrog will only be able to achieve a very small amount very slowly, so you will have no trouble wearing it down over time. He will probably only need to lose 3 fights before he dies.

As a final note, elves (particularly the unarmoured kind) are best for this.

My silly mistake, i was too busy thinking about how I used Glorfindel to help take down a magic using dragon.

@Hithero: I had forgotten about using artillery, those ballistas can really maim a dragon (and has maimed mine in the past). So thats a pretty good idea since balrogs are lacking in the fate department. He could easily ally 4 ballistas with a dwarf captain as their contingent hero and still have another couple of hundred of points left to spend on more troops (equal pointing the Balrog).

The ballistas could remove the creature on turn 1.

So ultimately the Weaknessess of the Balrog are as follows.

1.Three or more monsterous creatures (Ents or Eagles) used together to take it down.
2. Artillery (STR 7+), preferably more accurate (e.g Dwarf Ballista, and to a lesser extent Avenger Bolt Thrower).
3. Feeding it one low point model a turn, therefore preventing it from causing the most damage.
4. The point cost, because it is easy to purchase effective anti-monster equipment (any thing from points 1 or 2) or food for the dragon (point 3).

Good luck slaying a Balrog.

And what help will the Ghostbusters be in taking down something that isn't a ghost?

That would be a last resort I suppose, imagine how lucky you would have to be to score that wound, although spears and pikes would help.
