There are some people who do this, and there are some who don't. It's more common to find people who game and collect, but there are those who do prefer the paint only. I'd say it's moderately normal.

I collected and painted them for close to sixteen months before the thought of gaming even entered mine mind, though now I'm starting WHFB.

I just collect, sculpt and paint too! The game doesn't really interest me much. I more have a mind for making dioramas and the like, though I havent made any yet. Waiting till I get better. But yeah its normal I think. :D

Hey, I build model tanks and paint model soldiers as well as LotR SBG - so these are not even for wargaming. Is this normal? :P

I agree with Queen Beruthiel, ebay's probably the best place to get the rulebook.

I was a collector and convertor for 4 years before I had my first game, so nothing unusual there. Being playing SBG for 3 years now although its been a couple of months since my last game.

I can't stand WotR, and I don't do tournaments but they're just a couple of the many aspects of this hobby that I choose not to participate in. Collecting, Converting, Sculpting, Painting, Terrain building and Playing are all part of this and it's perfectly fine to do as many or as little of those as you wish.

I don't get to do much gaming, the creative endeavor really intrigues me.
I've always been fascinated with miniatures and have worked on many different scales and genres (from WWI airplanes, napoleonic era to tanks, race cars and spaceships.)
It's all good!

I find the gaming keeps me interested in painting. I will sometimes go for months without painting as it gets boring, but after playing a game I feel like I should paint more so I don't have to play with gray models.
