Hi folks,

I've more-or-less finished my rangers and thought I'd share some pics.

As you can see I've gone with the controversial blue theme; I'm pleased with the aesthetic effect even if they're not going to be the best-camouflaged rangers in Middle Earth :)

Some of the eyes could do with a little more attention and I might add a lighter highlight to the arrow bag things... but here they are:

...and one shot with Boromir leading the formation (now with improved armpit!)

(The static grass was expertly applied by my 2-year-old daughter)

C & C very welcome!

Now I can have a go at that ent...

Happy painting :)

I think they look fantastic. I like how you've muddied the cloaks. Very very nice. Good highlighting on the cloaks too.

Very nice indeed! Even though they aren't camouflaged they look like they can see hide from their enemies.
looking forwards to seeing the ent!

I really like what you've done, taking them a different route to the usual approach - credit for that.

You've done the touch upon Boromir nicely.

If I was picky I would want a more worn look on him as he appears a bit shiny, but if that was your aim them you;ve done that well.
The drybrush of mud is slightly heavy.

Despite my gripes, you have done a wonderful job even if you did get some expert help from your daughter... 8)

Like I said before, awesome painting, the paint scheme works well with the figures and with itself. I really like them. Now make some pond and waterfall pieces for them to blend into. :P 8)

Very nice looking army. The rangers look like they're ready for Night Ops, particularly around rocky areas.

Thanks for all the kind and constructive comments fellow painters!

I'd love to have a crack at some scenery theavenger001; as I'm moving house next week It'll be a little while before I can attempt it but you've got me thinking...

In the mean time I'm having a blast painting my ent. Pics to follow soon...

Happy painting!

Impressive work! Incredible, even! I have just one question:

Have you (or has anyone else) ever tried putting matt varnish on plastic figures? I've noticed a tendency towards "shininess" with the newer plastic figures (they tend to have wider areas of cloaks and cloth to catch the light).

Anyone have any thoughts?

I matt varnish all my figs, metal or plastic, after painting. I don't know that it makes much difference, plastic or metal, the shininess comes from the paint. I used to use Testors dullcote, but have recently switched to the GW stuff, Purity Seal in the US.

Thanks aelfwine,

I usually use the GW satin varnish, followed by dullcoat to take off that shine.

Having said that, I haven't actually gotten round to varnishing this army yet but I will before taking it for a game.

Hi again,

I've just about finished my ent; as you can see I've gone for a silver-birch-in-autumn look rather than the traditional green/brown look.

The shading is a little rough in places (but then pff it's a tree right?) and I think his eyes could do with an extra highlight. Otherwise I'm fairly pleased - especially for a 2-day job (gotta love the holidays!) 8)

Happy hobbying!
