Yes, the leather is a bit monotonous. I tried a drybrush-only method that do work well and fast (main point here). But thay do look a bit flat.

If I have time left, I will try washing some part with another colour. The leather on the two other companies is a bit paler, so the wash trick might work better on them.

We'll all see in time...

While paint was drying, I started working on this guy:

Image

I will use him as an Uruk-hai scout captain for my formation of scouts with shields. In addition of the crest on the helmet, I will also position the sword arm straight up.

Any idea how to "captainize" him more?

I think the rest of the "captainization" should probably come out in the painting. He's looking good, you make the crest out of plasticard?

I agree that painting him to a high standard is the best option.

I f your intrested in conversions for your scouts, I would look at John's (gaarew) from a Tale of 9 Gamer's. He's done some great conversion work which you may enjoy looking over.

Here's a link for your ease, http://www.one-ring.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=13863

It's a long thread, so it may take a little searching, but all the work there is top notch. 8)

I have reserved White Hand markings solely for my characters and other heroes in my Isengard force.

The other thing to do, would be make his base a bit more involved than your standard Uruks, maybe some battlefield detritus or corpses.

I wanted to keep the White hand symbol sparse, but didn't know how the determine the limit. That's a really good way to separate heroes from troopers, while keeping in character with the theme. I might borrow this idea. :)

I finished my scouts this morning, and half a company of Phalanx.

Still have to do today: other half company of Phalanx, half company of Warband and Lurtz. If everything go as planned, they will at least be primed...

I will try to take a group photo of what's finished. It will be a good incentive to continue forward.

So, for August:
  • half company of Phalanx (July)
  • half company of Warband (July)
  • Lurtz (July)
  • Troll captain (150pts)
  • Last company of Warband, including a captain and a banner (120pts)

This will bring my total to 760pts, just 10pts over that month's goal. It's a lot less minis than the previous month, so I hope to be able to finish on time for once. They will still take time though, as they are mostly command figures, which I want to do at a higher standard than my trooper.

If all goes well, I will have time left to work on the conversion for the next months, as at least half of what's left need conversion work (crossbows, ballistas, Dunlending horsemen).

Everything is going fine this month. Only one model is finished, but the rest have all got their armour done, with the exception of Lurtz.

First model this month is a captain for my Fighting uruk-hais. I didn't rush the paint job on him, being a command model. As you (maybe) can see, the blend on the skin and sword are a lot smoother. Also, it is my first model to get the White Hand symbol.

Nothing great, but I rebased Lurtz to make him stand out from the grunts around him when he'll be in a company.

And finally, I finished the small conversion for my uruk-hai scout captain. Nothing fancy, but with those small changes and a White Hand marking, he will be easy to identify.

Yes I agree with, Olle, the captain is probably the best I've ever seen. It's even better then GW's version of the model. The detail on the skin is amazing, you've really done a great job on this model. 8)
