Beating equals killing in my book. But if you really want to kill him, throw lot's of 6s.

Depends on the scenario. If you're playing To Kill a King or Contest of Champions, you probably have to kill him to win. To the Death and Ill Met by Moonlight require you to kill him to win. The High Ground might need you to kill him if you want a major victory. But in something like Seize the Prize or Storm the Camp, occupying him will do just fine.
