See? Not grey anymore. Well, not much. The eyes and teeth were a right PITA to paint, but it probably doesn't help that they were mostly done with an old GW Basecoat brush...

Got to finish off these 3 Orcs, but they are mostly done

and here is how clean the desk has stayed...

Not much. All this duty-free smoking must have spurred my creativity.

I'm glad you opted for an alternative to the 'grey bat' Games Workshop thought existed :)

Love those close ups, they show all the detail, great job mate.

And your desk looks really clean (still). Not sure about those cigarettes, has Khamul been at it again?

Your paint job on the bat models is great...love the brown instead of everyone's standard grey. Really sharp!

Cheers for the replies guys.

@ Larry - Yeah, I'd recommend static grass. Like I said about the Giant Spiders, I wasn't really happy with them until I added the grass, then they just seemed to be better in my eyes. I use some SG on all my minis now, again, depending on the effect I'm going for. The trick is not to overdo it. I think maybe 40-50% of the base is about right, plus with the bigger bases it really breaks up the vast expanse.

I stick with my basic green, with no embellishments, but different colours will give you different effects, and it's very susceptible to drybrushing. You can also glue it directly to minis, to give them a hairier appearance.

@ Jack - Well, being a minion of Darkness I expect he's smoking just as much as me to keep that Vader voice in tip-top condition.

Compliments on the painting of the bats.

I'm not keen on the models because I think they look a bit stupid. The sculptor could have made them more realistic and not made the faces quite so goofy-looking. However, I cannot fault your painting and the colour scheme you have used is great.

Keep it coming and tick off those boxes! :D

Tell me about it. Plus, only two of the bats are big enough to actually make out the details to any great extent, unless of course your 'Eavy Metal standard, which I'm not. I'm more like slightly dense with the possibility of returning to liquid form at room temperature metal...

Anyhoo, knocked out a quick test Warg, before I get started on the Chieftan (which is a great model,) Wanted to kinda stick to the film colours, but a bit darker, and keep the black mane.

So, scorched brown base, then quick drybrushes of Vermin Fur, Graveyard Earth, Bubonic Brown and Kommando Khaki, followed by a wash of Devlan Mud. Skin is Foundry's Quagmire shade (63A) followed by a wash of Badab black. Used that for the mane area too. Quick brush of Bubonic Brown on the claws and teeth, and the ever faithful Deep Maroon shade (64A) for the eyes.

Probably took about 10 minutes to do if you take out the drying time for the washes.

So, let me know what you think of the scheme, then, if it's a thumbs up I can get cracking with the other 5 and the Chieftan. And if you are all very good, I might just show you how to do very realistic blood and gore effects.

:D

Edit - it might be more useful to my cause if I include the pictures...

It sucks and so does your painting muhahahha  !

So sorry, I have a head ache :P . I like the paint job, it looks great. I never really liked the GW and New line Cinema version of wargs, they were more Hyhena ( how do ya spell it  ) when the where supposed to be wolves.
The face looks like it doesn't have any highlights though. it looks grey, it may be the pic but if it isn't, i might consider highlighing it more for the WW Chieftain.
Good painting.

Added a Bleached Bone drybrush to the flanks, and layered some Quagmire on the face and upper legs.

Are you ready for your close-up Mr Warg?

Image

It really isn't pretty when you soom in to this range, still, in reality, nobody will really be inspecting them this close up.

Very nicely done on the fur....maybe just another shade lighter highlight on the fur in some spots to give it just a bit more depth, but all in all very nice!!

Not going to comment on the Bat Swarms, other than nice paint job so far, another pathetic sculpt by GW in my oppinion !
Warg looks good so far, but with no disrespect to what you have done, it would have been interesting to see what people had done with these guys without GW's paint guide, Ive never understood where they got the grey head from ?

Wargames Foundry Boneyard light (9C) to the rescue!

Brian, no disrespect taken. I'm open to suggestion for an alt. paint scheme. :D I'm not particularly keen on the White Wargs from the Source books. And I don't think black would be terribly exciting, although I haven't seen any black Wargs done yet.

I'm all ears guys.

I hate the white Wargs too, although they do look nice in a winter scene or scenery. The only suggestion I can give is what I tried, and that was to reproduce the look of a German Sheperd dog.

Well, still no sign of my order. :(

Still, it means ATM I can almost see the end of the rainbow!

Hoping it gets here before the weekend, so that I can get it all assembled and primed (weather permitting.)

Nice updates. I like the way the test Warg turned out. You'll love painting the Chieftan. He is a great model.

Got any pix Bri?

I'm giving this idea some serious consideration, but I have a feeling that big golden dogs will look out of place amongst the rest of the army.

I think I'll make knock up another test piece, German Shepard style, but different colours. Maybe use the Quagmire for the skin and fur, and do the top of the head and mane black, to make them more wolfy looking.

@ BrentS - I am really looking forward to working on him. It's a great sculpt.

Well, found out my order has been delayed due to illness. Hopefully it will be sorted soon. I'm off Friday and it would be a bit of a shame if the day was wasted without new minis...

:D
