You do... he has OPD - obsessive painting disorder. I just have painting disorder - I can't paint. It would take me a year of non-stop practice to paint that well, and I wouldn't really paint them anyway. I'm decent/poor at painting, but I can't paint (too many distractions, here are some of them:)
Age of Empires, SimCity, TV, new games I download drivers for, etc. etc.
Keep painting Gaarew, and good luck with the box of unbuilts!

Not really, I have an obsessive BUYING disorder, and an obsessive NON painting disorder.

That's the whole point of the thread... To make me paint more.

Give your wallet to your wife! Quick! Before you buy any more!

I had the same problem for a while. The temptations of 'cheap' lotr on eBay. Stacks to paint over the next few decades!

I sometimes say that I won't buy any more until I've painted all those that I already have, but sometimes I don't manage this. Just bought a dwarf ballista (partly so I can see what it looks like so that I can scratch-build a few similar ones of my own for my own use).

Happy painting! Don't let the 'backlog' take the joy out of it. If it feels like a chore, some of the pleasure can go out of the hobby.

I'm impressed with your XL painting list. I guess that you don't have children yet?!

Well, I think I've done not bad for today.

Have finished the 4 Giant Spiders, 3 Broodling Bases, and the Spider Queen. All based too, just need varnished. Didn't do much to the Bats, because on close inspection, the primer hadn't reached the underside of the models, so I need to go over them with some black first. Enough babbling, here's the pics you mini-junkies!

and a family shot -

Whew, not bad for a day's work, 175 points of minis, and the Giant Spiders are a recurring addition in the scenarios.

To tell the truth, I still wasn't completely happy with the paintjob until I added the static grass to the bases. Then it all just seemed to come together, and I'm rather pleased with the effect myself.

The new GW washes are pretty good, when you first put them on you think you have totally screwed your work, then they dry (takes a while) and the effect is really different to what you were expecting.

:D

Cheers, I'm planning on doing some work on the Bats every night after work... They really shouldn't take too long. I hope.

Let's hope this is me turning over a new leaf, and getting into good painting habits.

It's amazing what I can achieve when I don't switch the xbox on...

Phew, I 'm glad you guys like them. I'm not sure they are up to my usual standard, except maybe the face on the SQ, and the close-ups really show off the short-cuts and sloppiness... Still, like pretty much everything else, they do look better in real life. Honest.

My photography seems to be getting a wee bit better too, although it's worrying just how many mould lines I'm noticing... And the grass on the SQ's mouth (it brushed off though).

I think I'm almost done for the day, went over the bats with black, drybrushed them entirely grey, then gave them a black ink wash, tidyed up the black cloak on Khamul, and inked the red bits, and painted and inked the rock on the Wild Warg Chieftans base.

Up in 5 hours to take her to work, so probably won't get anything done tommorow morning, unless Nikki goes for a nap. I'll hopefully get a bit done after work. I have an idea for the Bats, to make them seem a bit more unnatural, and more like warped creatures of darkness, but I'll keep that under wraps just now.

Man, all this productivity... Someone may have spiked my coffee...

edit - hopefully my order will arrive tomorow too. Then I can get some more stuff built up.

These are looking very nice mate, the task you have set out for yourself is incredible - talk about a commitment overload! But I reckon you might just be able to do it.

The spiders look great, although my only quibble is that the swarms are exactly the same as the surrounding base, and it sort of just detracts from them as a whole. Even by adding a wash or two just to make them different from each other would be a big improvement.

Cheers, yeah, it is a big undertaking, but at least some of them were done to begin with. Still, I have a good feeling about this project. Now, rather than just having a ton of stuff sitting and dithering over what to work on next, I've given myself some sort of focus and a schedule to work too. Can't guarantee that I'm going to be able to stick to it religiously (being a parent), or that I won't get distracted (Mmmmm, Mordor), but it's a step in the right direction.

Aha! Tricked you. :D

It's not really noticeable in the photos, but the spiderlings are Rotting Flesh, and the rocks are Elf Grey...

Still, I get what you mean, and since I'm not some prima donna artiste, and I'm quite happy to take constructive criticism on board, I've given the rocks a quick was with Devlan Mud, and , your absolutely right, it shows the contrast much better now. See?

Image

:D

Also grabbed a couple of quick shots of the next few things. I'm going to waffle a bit more before I show any more pics, but you'll probably all scroll down to see them and ignore this for now anyway...

Welcome back! Right, the bats I was thinking were going to be pretty quick to do, but I saw the Buckland Brewer's article on how he painted the fell beast wings for his diorama and am tempted to steal the idea to do the bat wings. Figure that, being warped by the presence of the Necromancer, the bats are a little more, let's say daemonic, than normal, and it's going to be a bit more interesting than just doing them black and grey...

Khamul, as you've no doubt already seen, well, I'm still not sure I like how he's going. I'm kinda going by the pics in the catalogues and the Easterling book, rather than the black/silver combo from FotN, and I've done a bit more of the robes red, but I'm not sure. I think after the ringwraiths and the Castelans I'm a bit scunnered with the plain black robes, so I'm trying to make him slightly different, if it turns out well, I might carry the idea through with the monikered Ring Wraiths. We'll see...

the bats are looking good so far, but Khamul looks, erm, not as good as your other nminis :? . The paint looks really thisk on him, but I think it is partially because of the quitlity of the Photo. But his sword looks thick, really thick  .
I still like your painting though, it is pretty and nice and lovely.

So much work in one day! At this rate you'll have nothing to paint for next week

I love the 'family photo' - really cute.

Your inking technique works really well, the broodlings look much better with their additional wash and the eyes on the spiders are awesome, are they pink? lol

The problem with (British) bats is that they are a very dark brown and this is often overlooked. Im liking how your highlights are looking but are you thinking of giving it another wash once your done?

Anyway keep to the schedule, your painting lots and lots in no time and all these pics are fab! :)

Well, I glad he's just a WIP then. I think he's been given a few too many coats over time whilst I've been dithering over how to paint him. As for the sword, my metals all look like that to begin with, then I work my magic. I'll let you into a little secret. When I'm doing metallics, I NEVER EVER thin the paint. All you pro-painters will be clutching at your brushes now, but that's the way it is. At the end of the day, I get the effect I'm looking for, with, and this is the best bit... two coats of paint and a wash.

If my order doesn't arrive soon that may very well be the case...

The eyes are Wargames Foundry Deep Maroon shade (64A), because that's the colour of the robes on my Morannon Orcs. I skipped the middle stage, and went straight to DM light (64C), gave them a quick wash with Baal Red and added the white reflection. Once they are varnished I'll probably gloss the eyes and fangs, and the... baby-making holes on the SQ.

I'm a big fan of my inking and drybrushing style. Like I said, I'm gonna fall flat on my face when it comes to doing the Elves...

The bats, well, I think you'll all be surprised at how they are looking now. That's not really highlights, more a base for the next few stages. I'll get pictures up later tonight, because I'm hoping to actually get them finished. At least that way I'll have all the Evil models for Scenario 1 complete.

I'll try, hopefully I can continue to resist the xbox.

So, quick update - bats are coming along nicely, greenstuffed the gaps in the WWC, was going to leave it as is, but then thought how bad it'll look with close ups, and done some work on Khamuls metals.

Oh, one more thing -

Cheers for all the support guys. You are giving me a real desire to see this through to the end. Long may it continue.
